What are the responsibilities and job description for the Shelter Advocate_Days position at MODEL CITIES OF ST PAUL INC?
Under the direct supervision of the Program Manager or his / her designee, the Shelter Advocate will play a crucial role in providing support to clients and guidance to staff and volunteers during t he hours ranging from 6 : 00 AM - 11 : 00 AM, Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday ( shifts could include hours within the range, depending on availability and business need). The Shelter Advocate's responsibility to ensure the shelter operates efficiently and guests’ basic needs are met is of utmost importance. The Shelter Advocate will also assist with coordinating activities with outreach partners and volunteers and support some administrative duties.
The Shelter Advocate will collaborate with the Shelter Operations Coordinator to provide reliable, uninterrupted overnight shelter coverage 365 days a year. The Shelter Advocate must also participate in routine staffing coverage, which may include days, nights, and / or weekends, in rotation with other staff.
The Shelter Advocate is expected to demonstrate leadership experience and have a proven track record of working in high-stress environments. This experience is crucial for effectively managing the shelter's operations and supporting guests in crisis. The Advocate must also possess strong interpersonal skills for working effectively with shelter guests and collaboratively with staff, volunteers, community partners, and other stakeholders.
Prepares sleeping arrangements for shelter guests and distributes snacks, beverages, and hygiene supplies, as needed. Ensures guest bedding and other items are laundered during shift. Completes data entry using the Homeless Management Information System and other reporting systems. Carries out established shelter processes and procedures to maintain a positive environment for participants and staff. Completes basic cleaning tasks during shifts, including laundry, sweeping, mopping, and waste removal. Completes incident reports for all medical emergencies, safety incidents, and violations of shelter guidelines. Completes other duties as assigned.

The Shelter Advocate must have the ability to work with people from various economic, racial / ethnic, and cultural backgrounds and high-risk individuals. This is a crucial aspect of the role that requires a unique set of skills and understanding.
The Shelter Advocate must be adaptable, organized, and innovative. This role requires a self-starter who can work independently and is able to manage the dynamic and often unpredictable nature of shelter operations. The ability to adapt to changing circumstances, maintain organization, and find innovative solutions is key to success in this role
- Knowledge of and ability to work with diverse and / or low-income populations, including those who may be experiencing homelessness, unstable housing, and / or mental illness, required.
- Ability to support shelter guests in crisis with empathy while maintaining professional boundaries.
- Ability to multi-task, prioritize in line with organizational priorities, and manage a certain level of expected chaos related to shelter operations.
- Proficiency in the following skills : verbal and written communication, collaboration, organization, and use of computers and technology for essential communication and work products.
