The following position is currently available: Senior Journeyman in Expo, Events and Exhibits. This is a position that requires a strong authoritative presence and great communication skills on what is to be done by the team and by when. A successful applicant will have relevant industry experience, post-secondary education, excellent task oriented and communication skills and a demonstrated level of flexibility when goals change. Results are something this leader would be driven to see while maintaining high standards, team accountability, while being a pillar of support to the journeyman team whenever and wherever needed to achieve the overall goal.
Position Overview
The Senior Journeyman is a highly skilled and experienced member of the Modern Expo Journeymen Team, recognized for their advanced proficiency in four or more technical disciplines within event and exhibit production. This role is designed for individuals who not only excel in their craft but also contribute to the growth and development of others through hands-on mentorship and training.
While not a formal crew lead, the Senior Journeyman plays a critical support role on high-impact projects by executing work independently, solving problems on-site, and training fellow Journeymen in their areas of expertise. Working closely with Production Supervisors, Project Managers, and Account Executives, they help ensure the quality, consistency, and efficiency of every show.
Key Responsibilities
Advanced Technical Execution
- Execute advanced-level tasks across at least four core technical areas, including but not limited to electrical, A/V, flooring, rigging, or structural builds.
- Act as a go-to expert during large-scale or complex shows, owning key elements of execution.
- Complete tasks with precision and efficiency, either independently or in collaboration with a small crew.
Training & Mentorship
- Train and mentor Journeymen and labor crews in your four areas of expertise through clear instruction, hands-on demonstrations, and ongoing support.
- Promote consistency in quality and efficiency across the team by sharing best practices.
- Foster a learning mindset within the team while reinforcing Modern Expo standards and safety protocols.
Professional Expectations
- Arrive on time and ready to work for every scheduled shift, call time, or deployment.
- Attend and actively participate in pre-show briefings, safety talks, and daily huddles.
- Represent Modern Expo with professionalism, courtesy, and a team-oriented mindset at all times.
Collaboration & Field Communication
- Collaborate with Production Supervisors and team leads to support on-site planning, changes, and execution.
- Clearly communicate progress, obstacles, and needs related to your assigned tasks and areas of focus.
- Work collaboratively with all departments (PMs, AEs, Warehouse) to support cross-functional success.
General Operations
- Assist with loading/unloading, floor layout and taping, pipe and drape, carpet installation, and general event labor when needed.
- Maintain, transport, and properly operate tools and equipment in your specialty areas.
- Operate company vehicles, box trucks, forklifts, and high lifts in accordance with safety procedures.
Problem Solving & Professionalism
- Troubleshoot and resolve field issues using sound judgment and initiative.
- Maintain composure under pressure and adapt quickly to changing needs or conditions.
- Model professionalism on-site in both attitude and interaction with clients, vendors, and team members.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in the event or exhibit industry.
- Demonstrated expert-level proficiency in at least four (4) of the following areas:
- Electrical setup and troubleshooting
- A/V system installation and support
- Flooring (carpet, padding, taping, finishing)
- Custom exhibit builds (AGAM, BeMatrix, AluVision)
- Pipe and drape layout and installation
- Rigging and high lift operations
- Vinyl wrapping and table skirting
- Equipment operation (forklifts, trucks, lifts)
- General warehouse or logistics operations
- Proven ability to train and coach others effectively in these areas.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Willingness and ability to travel out of state for shows as needed.
- Flexible schedule and a strong sense of accountability.
- Consistently punctual with a reliable attendance record.
- Valid driver’s license and a clean MVR; current forklift certification preferred.
