About the Job

As a Benefit Specialist at MoDOT & Patrol Employees Retirement System (MPERS), youll play a vital role in retirement payroll processing and benefits administration. You'll maintain and update records, review forms, and resolve discrepancies. While youll work independently, youll collaborate closely with your teammates to ensure accuracy and efficiency. What You'll Do

  • Prepare, balance, and process monthly retirement payroll and supplemental payroll.
  • Maintain and update master computer records for all members of the retirement system.
  • Review member beneficiary, tax, direct deposit, and refund of contribution forms for accuracy.
  • Apply complex provisions and procedures to determine applicable service eligibility, benefit amounts, and options for retirement.
  • Process and review retirement membership applications and terminations.
  • Resolve routine service or payroll discrepancies, reconcile differences, and determine corrections and adjustments.
  • Correspond with members and employer payroll / personnel representatives to acquire, maintain, and correct employee work records relating to retirement benefits.
  • Compile and verify monthly cost-of-living adjustment reports to update benefits.
  • Provide benefit verifications.
  • Perform telephone and in-person consultations with members and employer personnel / payroll representatives to answer membership, payroll, service, and eligibility concerns.

What We're Looking for in an Ideal Candidate

  • Basic Knowledge of Accounting and Financial Procedures : Acquired through graduation from high school plus two years of college or business school with courses in accounting, finance, or business.
  • Experience : Two years as a benefit specialist or equivalent experience. Qualifying experience in benefit administration, payroll, or accounting (particularly in a retirement system) may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required formal education. A college degree may be substituted for the two-year experience requirement.
  • Preferred Skills : Strong math skills, ability to multitask and stay organized. Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Technical Proficiency : Comfortable with using new technology and understanding federal and state laws applicable to MPERS benefits. Experience with the state's payroll system, SAMII, is a plus.
  • Attention to Detail : Highly meticulous and thorough.
  • Customer Service Skills : Excellent ability to interact positively with staff, members, and outside vendors.
  • Integrity and Ethics : Ability to demonstrate integrity and maintain confidentiality.

  • Competitive Salary : Starting minimum salary is $44,000. Additional salary consideration may be given for relevant experience. MPERS regularly performs compensation studies and provides salary increases to keep pay competitive.
