Summary
APP Surgical Oncology Fellow / 12 Month APP Fellowship Program
Note: This is a 12-month-long APP Fellowship – Tentative target start Aug 2025 - full benefits - $75,000 salary
The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) and Physician Assistant (PA-C) Fellowship Program is an innovative initiative, offering licensed APRNs or PA-Cs the opportunity to specialize in the evaluation, management, and treatment of surgical oncology patients.
The fellowship will be learning-based within multiple departments at Moffitt Cancer Center including GI, GU, Sarcoma, Ortho, Plastics, Cutaneous, Thoracic, and Acute Care. The APRN/PA-C will be training in the operating room for first assist responsibilities. In addition to first assist training the fellow will also be training in the ambulatory and inpatient care areas. The fellowship includes two elective rotations.
The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) Fellow provides patient care under the auspices of the Moffitt Medical Group (MMG), and serves as member of the academic medical enterprise, advancing the institutional mission of contributing to the prevention and cure of cancer.
Fellowship Goals:
- To prepare and train advance practice professionals to function as clinical experts in the complex environment of surgical oncology care.
- Provide training and education to successfully transition from academia or clinical practice to a specialty oncology clinical practice.
- To produce highly skilled and specialized APPs in the operating room/ clinical setting, reduce turnover, increase satisfaction, and improve clinical competence.
Position Highlights:
- Assists physicians with the evaluation, management, and treatment of a wide spectrum of patients with different medical problems, procedures, and co-morbidities.
- Works within a defined scope of practice and under the authority of supervising physician(s) or by specific protocol(s).

Responsibilities:
- Provides patient care as a member of an interdisciplinary team, working with many specialists to coordinate and optimize patient care.
- Correlates subjective and objective data to formulate a differential or working diagnosis.
- Formulates treatment plans for medical conditions within scope of practice.
- May perform minor surgical procedures within scope of practice.
- Prescribes oral and IV medications when appropriate, within the scope of practice.
- Documents patient care in accordance with medical staff rules.
- Research project and poster/podium presentation.
- Participation in Tumor boards and other educational venues weekly.
Credentials and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required and master’s degree preferred.
- Graduated from an accredited Advanced Practice Registered Nursing Program or an accredited Physician Assistant Program along with board certification in APRN or PA-C.
- Be licensed as an APRN or Physician Assistant in the state of Florida one month prior to fellowship start date.
- Must be currently certified in BLS and maintain certifications while in the fellowship.
- Under Florida law if the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse is licensed and practicing, the APRN must have an established written protocol authorizing the APRN to perform certain functions.
- For PAs, they must have a PA prescribing notification documentation filled out and sent to the State for those Physicians that they may work with and prescribe medications.
- Experience in oncology or general surgery; critical care experience is a plus.
