Job Purpose -
The Commercial Underwriter plays a critical role in evaluating, underwriting, and managing insurance risks within the organization’s guidelines. They foster relationships with distributors and clients to support business growth, retention, and acquisition while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.

Roles And Responsibilities -
- Administer underwriting rules, rating guidelines, and ensure compliance with insurance laws and regulations.
- Collaborate with Line of Business representatives to meet organizational goals and business needs.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with distributors (agents and brokers) to support business retention and acquisition.
- Assess renewal and new account opportunities proactively to drive growth.
- Conduct detailed opportunity assessments with distributors to identify and capitalize on growth areas.
- Qualify accounts to align with the organization’s risk appetite and business objectives.
- Make planned broker/customer visits with clear objectives to strengthen relationships and provide tailored insurance solutions.
- Act as a resource for agents, brokers, and customers, supporting the organization’s sales culture.
- High School Diploma or equivalent with 3 years of experience in underwriting or a market-facing role; or 6 years in claims or underwriting support.
- Alternatively, a Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and relevant experience (1 years in underwriting or 4 years in claims/underwriting support).
- Knowledge of underwriting principles, legal guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to meet time restraints for new and renewal business quotes.
- High School Diploma or equivalent with 5 years of underwriting or market-facing experience; or 10 years in claims or underwriting support.
- Alternatively, a Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and relevant experience (3 years in underwriting or 8 years in claims/underwriting support).
- Proven teamwork skills and the ability to deliver results under tight deadlines.
- Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.
- Technical expertise in commercial property underwriting.
- Established broker relationships, particularly in the Midwestern region.
- Strong communication skills with a sales-oriented mindset and creative problem-solving abilities.
