BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITY :
The Senior Merchandising Clerk’s responsibilities include : Focusing on merchandise (keeping the shop clean, neat, stocked, and organized), supervising the pricing process, making sure pricing is done correctly and according to standard, helping the Buyer and Manager realize their merchandising visions by creating and maintaining engaging, interesting displays, being in charge of shop operations when no managers or supervisors are present, being a greeter and helper on the floor, keeping stockrooms neat and organized, receiving merchandise in Yellow Dog when needed.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :
- Keep the shop stocked. Run reports each day on the previous day’s sales and restock needed merchandise.
- Walk the floor at the start of each shift to neaten and make notes of particular areas that need attention.
- Keep the shop neat, clean, and organized. Complete housekeeping tasks as needed, keep displays neat and easily shop-able keeping in mind safety and ease of guest access.
- Keep all stock areas neat and organized, including shop understock and stockrooms
- Follow Manager and Buyer’s merchandising concepts to build displays accordingly and maintain as necessary.
- Inform the Manager and Buyer of low stock.
- Receive merchandise and run sales reports in Yellow Dog when necessary.
- Supervise the pricing process to make sure items are being priced accurately and to standard, ensure items are being put on display properly, and that back stock is being stored properly.
- Delegate tasks to staff whenever needed. Work with Supervisor on duty to when assigning tasks to ensure priorities are being taken care of first.
- Maintain a presence in the Gift Shop to greet and help guests.
- Focus weekly on an assigned area to deep clean, stock, and organize.
- Meet with Manager and Buyer daily for updates, special tasks for the day, etc.
- Supervise shop operations in the absences of supervisors and managers.
- Communicate to co-workers items that came in, where they were displays, and where backstock has been placed.
- Clerk when required including opening and closing the shop.
- Provide the very best in customer service to all of our internal and external guests both in person and on the phone.
- Promote a friendly and helpful atmosphere amongst guests and employees and maintain a high level of friendliness.
- Answer guest questions and take initiative in satisfying guest requests.
- Actively sell merchandise and upsell by listening to guests’ needs.
- Listen to guest comments pertaining to retail operations and convey this information to management.
- Perform housekeeping tasks in the shop including cleaning glass, dusting shelves and merchandise, cleaning under displays etc. and in stockrooms.
- Receive shipments, note any broken or missing merchandise, price merchandise, display merchandise in shop, and back stock remaining merchandise.
- Assist with inventories including counting back stock and shop, maintain easily counted back stock.
- Listen well, communicate effectively and establish effective working relationships with other staff, management, vendors and guests that have a variety of educational backgrounds and values.
- Demonstrate organizational skills, proofreading skills, and produce well-written, error-free copies.
- Work productively and efficiently with or without supervision when performing routine tasks.
- Prioritize and meet deadlines in a fast-paced dynamic environment.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with OSHA, Health Department, and ADA regulations.
- Attend events, programs, and trainings as needed to enforce and support Mohonk Mountain House policies and culture.
- Exercise vigilance to prevent theft.
- Represent the shop in a positive and professional manner in all dealing with guests, employees and other departments.
- Research industry trends regularly and maintain a current knowledge of common or trending practices in the industry.
- Comply with cost reduction measures.
- Demonstrate proficiency with Windows-based operating systems and use software including MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook.
- Learn and retain information on how to use a POS system, including learning all of the necessary procedures and functions, maintaining the proper cash drawer balance, counting money, and making change.
- Adhere to Mohonk Mountain House’s Dress and Grooming Standards; presenting a neat, clean and well-groomed appearance and maintaining a positive, professional image to our customers.
- Learn and successfully demonstrate the Mohonk Mountain House Service Steps with Service Strategies with guests and staff.
- Learn and retain knowledge of historical facts and information about Mohonk Mountain House.
- Maintain a calm, friendly, efficient manner at all times to guests, customers and employees.
- Maintain a flexible work schedule including days / nights, weekdays / weekends, holidays, and during peak periods of business.
- Maintain regular, predictable and punctual attendance during regularly scheduled work hours.
- Answer guest questions with accurate information and demonstrate a friendly and helpful personality by smiling, eye contact, initiating conversation and engaging with others.
- Reach with hands and arms, bend, kneel, stoop, twist and flex arms, walk up and down stairs / inclines, sit, climb up / down ladders or stand for up to 5 hours at a time.
- Inspect the work of others by touch, sight, sound and smell for conformance to prescribed standards of cleanliness.
- Fold clothes, operate cash register, and prepare Soda Fountain items.

- Lift up to 40 pounds from ground level to counter level and carry a distance of up to 50 feet with / without assistance. Walk up to 5 miles per day.
- Maneuver carts or dollies safely with loads up to 200 pounds up and down stairs, elevators, through passageways up to 200 feet.
- See close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Identify and differentiate between variations and shades of color.
- Speak, read and write the English language and communicate in a clear and congenial manner, with our guests, visitors and employees. Hear verbal instructions, directions and warnings.
- Perform basic mathematical skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and perform and record cash / credit transactions accurately.
- Stand for extended periods of time up to 4-5 hours at a time.
