What are the responsibilities and job description for the Curatorial Assistant, Painting and Sculpture (Temporary) position at MoMA?

The Museum of  Modern Art is currently accepting applications for a temporary Curatorial Assistant to assist with an upcoming retrospective exhibition and catalog.    The anticipated time period for this temporary assignment is mid-May to early August 2024.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Assists Chief Curator at Large with all aspects of research, planning, organization, and realization of major upcoming retrospective exhibition. Answers related inquiries.
  • Performs exhibition organizational functions, including checklist installation/production research, bibliographic and checklist research, loan correspondence, publication research and production, website development, and public program planning.
  • Researches and executes outreach to public and private collections for prospective loans and checklist development; coordinates viewing visits for curator (in the US and abroad); travels domestically to view prospective loans and liaise with potential lenders and stakeholders as needed. 
  • Writes, edits, and assists in the production of exhibition catalog and exhibition-related materials, including wall texts and extended object labels
  • Coordinates permissions and image rights requests for exhibition publication.
  • Researches and catalogs the Museum collection and archives as they relate to the exhibition project. Assists in the maintenance of collection works and loans, and expedites arrangements for custodial, registration, conservation, and preparation work as required in the gallery, study and storage areas.
  • Functions as a liaison with outside persons and organizations, and with other departments within the Museum.
  • Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in art history, or equivalent work experience. Expertise in the history of postwar abstraction, painting, sculpture, and works on paper in the postwar and contemporary periods, and African-American art preferred.
  • Superior research and writing skills are essential.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail and working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and other standard office procedures and skills. Familiarity with The Museum System (TMS) is helpful.
  • Knowledge of Photoshop, familiarity with online content and programming is helpful.

Salary: The salary for this position is a biweekly rate of $‎2,559.58 (gross).
