What are the responsibilities and job description for the Resident Teacher position at Momentum Academy?
Momentum Academy is a public charter school district with four campuses in St. Louis City, serving scholars in grades PK-8. Momentum promotes academic excellence in an environment of mutual care and support that builds character, confidence, and community among each of our scholars so that they reach their full potential.
Position Overview: The Momentum Academy Resident Teacher is a position created exclusively for persons accepted into Teach St. Louis’ Residency program and committed to Momentum Academy in St. Louis. Teach St. Louis is designed as an apprenticeship program where program participants earn their Missouri teaching licensure in Elementary Education or Secondary Math, Science, or ELA. Participants also earn a master’s degree through an innovative partnership with Washington University. Throughout the duration of the program, Resident Teachers work in a Momentum Academy school. Resident Teachers will complete their initial residency year at one of the program's Momentum Academy training sites, co-teaching with an experienced mentor teacher. After successful completion of the residency year, Teacher Residents are certified and become lead-teachers within the Momentum Academy network. In the second year as a lead-teacher, Teacher Residents continue coursework at Washington University, earning a Master of Art in Teaching and Learning at the end of year two.
Residency Program Components:
Momentum Academy and Teach St. Louis partner to provide Teacher Residents with an accelerated and cost-effective pathway into a career in education. Teacher Residents will:
- Complete a rigorous full-year classroom apprenticeship, co-teaching Monday - Thursday with an experienced mentor teacher at a Momentum Academy training site school.
- On Fridays and one weekday evening, participate in aligned graduate-level coursework with Teach St. Louis, preparing them to effectively serve students in urban schools and Momentum Academy classrooms.
- Earn initial teacher certification in the state of Missouri and a Master’s degree from Washington University in St. Louis.
- Receive ongoing instructional coaching during their first two years in the program.
- Commit to lead-teach in a Momentum Academy school for 3 years after the initial apprenticeship year.
Eligibility:
Teacher Residents are diverse candidates who believe that all students are capable of academic achievement and are ready to make a difference in St. Louis schools. We look for candidates with a variety of backgrounds, including recent college graduates, working professionals, and career changers. To be eligible to apply, all candidates must have the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree completed by July 2025, in any area of study
- Cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher
- A commitment to work at Momentum Academy for a total of four years.
Compensation & Benefits:
During the initial apprenticeship year, residents receive a salary provided by Momentum Academy, along with full health benefits and paid time off. Residents are also provided a permanent teaching position at Momentum Academy upon completion of the apprenticeship year. In year 2, Teacher Residents become lead-teachers earning a full-time teacher salary.
