Momentum is seeking seasonal Summer Camp Counselors to lead and instruct young climbers in a fun and dynamic camp environment. Summer Camp Counselors play a vital role in creating an engaging, supportive, and safe experience for all participants. This position requires strong communication skills, enthusiasm for working with kids, and the ability to maintain a positive, high-energy atmosphere.
Summer Camp Counselors will facilitate Momentum Summer Camps from May through August, ensuring that campers have an unforgettable experience. Counselors are responsible for leading climbing instruction, games, and activities while upholding safety and risk management standards. Depending on the gym location, counselors will teach bouldering techniques and, where applicable, top-rope climbing skills.
Position Type: Seasonal, Part-Time or Full-Time (20-40 hrs/week)
Minimum Age Requirement: 16
Compensation: Starting at $14.00/hour
Season Dates: Late May – Mid-August
Responsibilities & Expectations
Primary Focus (20-40 hrs/week, based on availability):
- Instruct Summer Camps – Create a safe, fun, and engaging experience for campers.
- Teach Climbing Skills – Provide age-appropriate instruction based on gym type:
- Full-Service Gym: Top-rope climbing, auto-belay, and bouldering.
- Bouldering Gym: Bouldering techniques, movement skills, and falling safety.
- Lead Games & Activities – Keep campers engaged with structured play on and off the walls.
- Ensure Safety & Supervision – Enforce climbing best practices and maintain a positive environment.
- Encourage Growth & Confidence – Foster teamwork, problem-solving, and self-esteem.
Daily & Weekly Responsibilities:
- Set up and break down camp activities each day.
- Gain awareness of each camper’s skill level and provide individualized support.
- Lead warm-ups, climbing challenges, and team-building activities.
- Interact with parents before and after camp, providing feedback on campers’ progress.
- Support operations staff with summer camp gear.
- Ensure all campers follow Camp rules and Momentum’s policies.
Requirements:
Skills & Qualifications
Required:
- Basic climbing knowledge & safety awareness (minimum 1 year of climbing experience).
- Ability to engage and supervise large groups of kids in an active environment.
- Strong communication skills and ability to command respect in a friendly, professional manner.
- Passion for working with children and fostering a love for climbing and adventure.
Preferred (but not required):
- Previous experience coaching, facilitating, or working with kids.
- First Aid/CPR certification preferred.
Physical & Environmental Demands
- Comfortable working in a loud, high-energy environment.
- Capable of speaking in front of large groups and providing clear instruction.
- Physically able to climb, balance, kneel, pull, push, and grasp objects as needed.
- Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly.
- Comfortable spending long periods standing and walking on uneven surfaces.
