Job Summary
Pathology Transcriptionist is responsible for the accurate transcription of pathology reports, filing, patient reports, monitoring pathology billing and other related administrative tasks as assigned. Coordinates pathology consultations. Other duties as assigned
Responsibilities
Pathology Transcription
Transcribes, distributes, and charges for all Pathology reports accurately and efficiently, while meeting established turnaround times. Consistently verifies accuracy of patient information by identifying such things as patient name, dictator’s name, and case number to ensure patient safety. Accurately forwards correct historical data to pathologists in a timely manner while utilizing good time management skills to prevent overtime. Documents and handles any problems/questions/complaints. Consistently demonstrates open, respectful communication with coworkers to facilitate teamwork and efficiency. Willingly accepts and supports departmental changes made by management team.
Sectretarial Duties
Handles requests for reports, slides, and consultations accurately and promptly. Answers and directs calls appropriately. Responsible for charting surgical and PAP reports for inpatients and mailing of results to appropriate physicians. Trains others in departmental policies and procedures. Orders department supplies as needed. Performs other clerical duties (i.e. copying and filing) as required. Accurately performs typing and word processing to create and maintain manuals, correspondence, and reports. Responsible for scheduling specimen courier services as required.
Charges and Billing
Accurately enters or confirms pathology charges as per established procedures. Helps resolve billing problems associated with Pathology billing services.
Lab Customer Service
Greets all customers in a cheerful, professional manner as per established policy (i.e. identifying self by name, scripting). Actively listens to customer needs and concerns. Communicates with customers and gives them accurate, reliable, competent, and timely information regarding their requests in a timely manner. Attends 100% customer service training and always demonstrates customer service excellence.
Performs Other Duties as Required
Performs other duties as required. Attends mandatory in-services, staff meetings, and actively participates in self-education. Maintains required job knowledge (e.g. licensure and credentials, continuing education, etc.). Completes all required competency assessments on time.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Light Work: Frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 lbs. with a maximum lifting of 25 lbs.
Medical Transcription experience preferred. Transcription experience in a Pathology setting is desirable. Demonstrates proficiency in the use of computers and word-processing software; proficiency normally acquired through training or previous experience. Effective interpersonal communication skills in order to acquire needed information and maintain cooperative work relationships with internal and external customers.
