Position: Special Education Instructional Paraprofessional
Reports To: Director of Special Education/Building Administrator/Classroom Teachers
Qualifications:
● High School Diploma.
● Highly Qualified per NCLB Requirements. (Successful completion of Parapro Testing or 60 College
Credits).
● Ability to demonstrate essential reading, writing, and mathematics skills.*
● Ability to speak English clearly and properly.
● Current or become trained in CPI
● Demonstrated physical ability to lift and move students.
● Prior successful experience with children/students.
● Willingness to follow instructions provided by all supervisors listed above.
● Demonstrated ability to relate well with students, staff, and parents.
● Demonstrated ability to exhibit cooperative and positive attitudes.
● Technology literate.
*Mona Shores Public Schools uses a battery of assessments to determine each candidate’s level of proficiency in specific skills areas.
Preferred Qualifications:
● Values and promotes flexibility/patience.
● Current enrollment in a teacher education program with a concentration in the instructional area under consideration.
Job Goal:
● To assist teachers to achieve their instructional objectives by working with an individual student or small group.
● To assist in daily living skills, support physical activities, transitions and to have the ability to administer seizure medications, so they will reach expectations established for the entire class.
Responsibilities:
● Follow directives, management techniques, and routines designated by the classroom teachers, Building
Administrator, and/or Director of Special Education.
● Work with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material and skills initially introduced by the teacher.
● Administer achievement tests and other assessments when assigned.
● Refer parental questions and concerns to teachers and/or the Building Administrator while keeping all information about students confidential.
● Assist with student medical/health concerns as needed.
● Assist with student personal hygiene needs, daily living skills, and related instruction when needed.
● Assist students with restroom related duties when needed: diapering, changing soiled underwear and/or clothes, toilet training, etc.
● Perform all other duties assigned by the classroom teachers, Building Administrator and/or Director of
Special Education.
● Provide positive behavior support and redirection, including implementation of any behavior plans as assigned.
Terms of Employment:
● School year, per the instructional paraprofessional work schedule.
● Pay scale and fringe benefits per the Master Agreement.
Evaluation:
● Performance in this position shall be evaluated by the Building Administrator.
