The individual in this role is responsible for managing all aspects of materials flow and maintaining control and accuracy over all inventory and supplies to support business requirements and growth. This includes developing and managing supplier relationships, procurement, planning, scheduling, costing, warehousing, logistics, receiving, shipping, handling hazardous materials, and all necessary transactions.

Previous Education/Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years progressive experience in the management of materials and sourcing within a design and manufacturing environment.
  • History of successful distribution and logistics management
  • BS degree in business administration/management, logistics, supply chain, or other related discipline.
  • Suitable combination of education and experience will be considered.

Required Skills/Competencies

  • Knowledge/understanding of principles and methods for moving goods [including hazardous] by air, rail, sea, or road, including the relative costs and benefits as well as current industry best practices and technology
  • Strong leadership/management skills (independent thinking, handling of multiple projects, team building, collaborative team player, performance management, motivation, goal setting, feedback, accountability, etc.)
  • Knowledge of demand planning, vendor management, lean manufacturing, and supply chain management
  • In-depth knowledge of supply chain and inventory management systems
  • Hands-on experience with forecasting and budgeting
  • Must be able to properly assess, appropriately plan, and address ever-changing priorities.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and organizational skills
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Strong sense of time organization and urgency
  • Ability to understand basic accounting and general ledger accounts
  • Understanding of cross cultural and/or global business
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Job Responsibilities (E=Essential Function)

The duties and responsibilities of the Materials Manager include, but are not limited to, the following:

E: Define, develop and manage department to assist Company in meeting its long-range goals and objectives, including meeting or exceeding customer expectations.

E: Achieve financial objectives by working with senior management to prepare the materials budget, schedule expenditures, analyze variances, and initiate corrective actions as required.

E: Work with other departments to meet cost, productivity, accuracy and timeliness targets.

E: Monitor/maintain current and research new contract manufacturers (PCBs, cables, mechanical, etc.).

E: Perform analysis of customer demand, sales forecast and historical material usage to develop and execute build to order and build to forecast plans.

E: Identify, develop, negotiate, and manage effective relationships with existing and potential suppliers of goods and services (domestic and international) as well as logistics suppliers to meet the established cost, quality and delivery targets.

E: Strategically plan and manage logistics, warehouse, and transportation, including quantity, delivery times, and efficiency.

E: Responsible for ensuring shipping accuracy according to customer, vendor, and carrier requirements. Implement any corrective actions as required.

E: Adhere to established company policies, procedures, terms and conditions and legal matters that affect purchasing policies, hazardous materials shipments, vendor management, etc.

E: Establish and implement methods and best practices related to the systems and processes that support inventory forecasting, purchasing, material control, and shipping.

E: Maintain metrics and analyze data to assess performance and implement improvements.

E: Resolve MRB quality issues, working with both internal and external resources.

E: Maintain inventory levels at a minimum while ensuring inventory is in stock as necessary to meet the build plan.

E: Supervise and maintain the physical inventory of materials.

E: Manage the operational and fiscal activities of the department(s) to include staffing levels, budgets and financial goals (including inventory turns and/or levels).

E: Confer with Senior Management and other Managers to review achievements and discuss required changes in goals or objectives resulting from current status and conditions.

E: Responsible for ensuring proper collection, removal and reporting of hazardous waste, in accordance with our classification with the State of New Hampshire as a [Very] Small Quantity Generator.

E: Comply with laws, regulations and ISO requirements, including overseeing procedures for purchasing, receiving, stockroom, and shipping areas.

Accountability and Reporting:

  • This position reports directly to the Administration and Operations Team; primarily the COO.
  • The individual in this position works in close collaboration with the Production, Quality, and Engineering Managers.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervises Buyers, Inventory Warehouse Coordinator, Inventory Assistant, Materials Logistics Coordinator, and Packaging/Shipping Associate.

  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
  • Foster a well-trained and motivated team.
  • Create an environment of open communication with all employees at all times to ensure subordinates are comfortable to bring problems or concerns at any time.
  • Coordinate with Human Resources to maintain appropriate staffing levels, counsel and evaluate employees, identify training needs and schedule appropriate training for employees.
  • Coach and provide career development advice to staff.
  • Schedule staff to ensure sufficient coverage for all work assignments, training, vacations, breaks, overtime, and absences
  • Maintain a safe and healthy work environment by reinforcing, maintaining or recommending improvements to company policies that adhere to local, state and federal environmental, health and safety regulations.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $75,000.00 - $95,000.00 per year
