Position Summary
This is a skilled Grade 1 position that oversees, operates and maintains a complex industrial wastewater pretreatment system that contains a variety of wastewater treatment processes and auxiliary equipment for the processing and handling of industrial wastewater and generated industrial byproducts.

This is a skilled Grade 1 position that oversees, operates and maintains a complex industrial wastewater pretreatment system that contains a variety of wastewater treatment processes and auxiliary equipment for the processing and handling of industrial wastewater and generated industrial byproducts.
Essential Functions
- Operate and monitor all wastewater pretreatment plant equipment and make necessary adjustments based on findings.
- Take periodic samples and perform and record the results of various laboratory tests to assess and monitor the condition of the system and determine optimal chemical and biological treatment.
- Maintain the efficiency of plant and laboratory operations, including maintenance of equipment pumps, filters, and machinery, testing, quality control and record keeping procedures.
- Read and record meter and gauge readings.
- Maintain plant records, including operations logs, daily diaries, computer data entry and chemical inventories.
- In accordance with the Wastewater Discharge Permit, collect and submit all required effluent sampled to a certified laboratory.
- Ensure timely reporting to local authorities and facility management if an upset or exceedance occurs.
- Performs ground maintenance and housekeeping duties as needed.
- Knowledge of:
- Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work
- Chemical safety practices
- General math and basic algebra skills
- Practices and procedures used in the operation and maintenance of wastewater pretreatment systems
- Sampling methods and the physical and chemical tests used in treatment plant control
- Servicing requirements of moving machinery
- Hazards and safety practices involved in working around high voltage equipment and moving machinery
- Process quality control requirements and remedial measures in dealing with process malfunctions and emergencies
- Ability to:
- Operate and maintain pumps , motors and equipment
- Read meters and gauges and other recording instruments
- Maintain operating records
- Use Microsoft Excel (including data entry, basic math formulas and formatting)
- Make mathematical computations
- Read and comprehend written materials,
- Learn technical and specialized processes pertinent to wastewater treatment plant work, including required laboratory analysis
- Use common hand tools
- Work independently and understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Work harmoniously with others
- Health and Physical Condition Requirements:
- Regularly lift and/or move up to 75 pounds
- Regularly climb stairs and ladders
- Able to work in wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, outside weather conditions, extreme cold and extreme heat.
- Experience:
- Two to five years working with municipal and/or industrial wastewater (preferred).
- Education /Training:
- High School Diploma or GED
- License or Certificate:
- Wastewater Operator Grade 1 license with the State of Iowa or obtain within 7 months after start of employment.
- Valid Motor Vehicle Operators License
- Must be 18 years old.
