About the Job
The Martinsville, VA Plant Engineering and Facilities Manager is responsible for the definition and execution of plant Engineering projects pursuant to maintaining a facility capable of operating in a safe, food-safe, legally compliant and efficient way. This includes sustaining projects that ensure the operational viability of the plant and keep the facility and production assets in optimal condition, as well as plant-lead cost improvement and automation projects.

This role is also responsible for the management of the Martinsville plant CapEx portfolio, including preparation of funding documentation, facilitation of approval process and forecasting of CapEx spend across the entire portfolio of CapEx projects for the plant.

Lastly, this role will also be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the facility grounds and all utilities equipment at this manufacturing location.

Key Duties and Responsibilities for Engineering Management:

  • Is a member of the Plant Engineering Leadership team serving as the main liaison between plant needs and Corporate Engineering support needs.
  • Serves as a primary resource to identify and provide solutions to safety, food safety and quality issues which require CapEx projects to be addressed.
  • Develops, manages, creates and executes assigned capital projects including scope definition, creation of technical documentation, issuing POs, scheduling, contractor management, CapEx cash flow management, equipment installation and start up.
  • Manages project schedules and budgets to deliver projects on time and within approved budget for assigned projects.
  • Manages CapEx budget for the plant, starting with development of 3-year plan, updating cash flows on a monthly basis and leading the funding approval process, including preparation of all required funding documentation.
  • Supports coordination and execution of Corporate Engineering managed projects, and provides technical support as appropriate, including but not limited to execution of factory acceptance tests, equipment installation supervision, execution of equipment commissioning plans.
  • Provides technical support to production floor and maintenance when required, mainly when advanced troubleshooting skills are required to drive root cause analysis.
  • Participates in defining Engineering standards in partnership with Corporate Engineering team.
  • Provides regular written updates for status and progress of assigned projects, including publishing of project dashboards in collaboration with Corporate Engineering.
  • Creates technical documentation if/when needed in support of plant needs / priorities, including but not limited to machine troubleshooting guides.

Key Duties and Responsibilities for Facility and Utilities Management:

Oversees the operation, maintenance and upkeep of the facility envelope, yards and grounds, infrastructure, and utility components that support our production systems to help in the delivery of our overall business goals. This includes:

  • Buildings and building infrastructure o Building mechanical systems, including heating and refrigeration infrastructure o Compressed air infrastructure
  • Power distribution infrastructure within the facility.
  • Waste water treatment plant operation
  • Responsible for maintaining the facility envelope and utility systems in compliance with all regulations to ensure a safe and food-safe plant operation. This involves ensuring life safety systems are compliant, always keeping the plant in proper sanitary condition, and keeping the utility systems within all safety and food safety policies and procedures.
  • Develops a variety of facility and utility plans, managing the facility/infrastructure budget accordingly and driving the execution of those plans. Accountable for implementing preventative maintenance procedures within the assigned area, including delegating the work effectively across all plant services.
  • Responsible for identifying areas of utility efficiency while supporting energy efficient consumption onsite through operations team. Be an Energy Leader that will be lead the way in energy saving initiatives for the Martinsville site.

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering with focus on Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Automation and Controls (or other related degree).
  • 7 years Engineering experience in food or other regulated manufacturing industry.
  • Management experience in a technical capacity.
  • Knowledge of Relevant Regulations and Building Codes.
  • Troubleshooting of Industrial Equipment.
  • Comprehensive technical background in a related field or role.
  • Must be 18 years or older.

A successful candidate will have experience with the following utility equipment:

  • Boilers / Pressure Vessels
  • Chillers / Cooling Towers
  • Air Compressors / Dryers
  • Waste Water Treatment systems
  • Fire Protection Systems
  • HVAC / Ventilation Systems
  • Roofing / Wall Envelope Systems

Competencies and Skills

  • Able to work cooperatively and effectively with a multidisciplinary technical team.
  • Strong leadership skills, with prior experience having lead plant and/or project teams.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and seek critical feedback from operations personnel.
  • Must be a highly motivated self-starter.
  • Superior problem-solving skills, root cause analysis and willingness to take a hands-on approach to troubleshooting.
  • Able to effectively lead contractors on site to safely complete critical project, maintenance and repair tasks.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to navigate a manufacturing environment where PPE is required and where temperatures may fall outside of comfortable ranges.
  • Must be able to work a full shift, come to work on time, work overtime as needed and the ability to work according to the necessary schedule to meet job requirements with or without reasonable accommodation is an essential function of this position.
