Job Description:
Function of Position:
Under supervision of the Coordinator of Global Education and the Coordinator of International Services, the Advisor will assist with outreach, enrollment, and retention efforts for immigrant, refugee, and ESOL students. The Advisor will also assist with the planning and execution of community based global learning campus programs and projects that highlight the College and community's diversity and encourages belonging. Together, the Coordinators and this position will design and manage the Global Commons to be a welcoming center for MCC students from around the world with programs that support campus internationalization efforts.
Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:
- Assist with outreach and recruitment efforts with Rochester area adult ESOL education programs (e.g. OACES, REOC, BOCES), high school ESOL classes/teachers, and local refugee centers.
- Assist with MCC application process for adult students with foreign diplomas, including completion of online application, referrals to Testing Services, and submission of necessary academic documents. Liaise with Office of Admission on completion of application and acceptance.
- Counsel ESOL students on MCC academic programs (e.g. types of programs, timetables to complete, competitive admission processes, how programs might relation to a student's past education or work experiences).
- Refer students who do not meet matriculation requirements to community-based ESOL programs, MCC Strong Foundations, or MCC Pathways programs.
- Under supervision of the Coordinator, International Services (or training from ESOL faculty) assist with academic advisement/registration for ESOL students - selecting the necessary ESOL courses and other program courses that will encourage student success. Keep track of financial aid eligibility issues, program changes, and follow-up schedule changes as needed.
- Liaise with Office of Financial Aid to refer students for FAFSA/TAP application assistance. Serve as advocate for students who require assistance understanding communications and submitting missing documentation to Financial Aid.
- Assist students with understanding Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) requirements and the SAP appeal process for students who do not meet requirements.
- Clarify and interpret college policies, communications, and student expectations for ESOL students from various campus offices including Student Accounts, Financial Aid, Schools/Pathways, Residence Life, Health Services, and more.
- Refer students to campus supports such as Tutoring/Learning Support, Counseling & Disability Services, Health Services, Student Life & Leadership, and more.
- Assist with advising of the Global Union student organization.
- Assist with the planning and execution of International student orientation.
- Assist the Coordinator of Global Education with planning community- and partner- based global learning and multicultural programming for international students, ESOL students, and the MCC campus at large. Actively encourage international student and ESOL student involvement in co-curricular opportunities at the college.
- Assist with updating the GEIS section of the MCC website.
- Other duties or projects as assigned by the Coordinators.

Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
- Earned bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited higher education institution
- At least one year of work experience in an educational institution or human services setting - preferably in a person-facing facing role such as student advisement, student life, counseling, or ESOL teaching/instruction.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills .
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively across cultural boundaries or with diverse groups of different backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Earned master's degree or higher in education, higher education, counseling or a related field from a regionally-accredited higher education institution.
- Study or travel abroad experience.
- Working knowledge of educational information management and advising systems such as Banner and DegreeWorks.
- Experience coordinating educational programs or events.
- Working knowledge of foreign academic credentials/foreign education systems.
- Working knowledge or awareness of regional employment and training trends, university transfer opportunities, etc.
Additional Information:
MCC is currently testing a Pilot Telecommuting Program that runs from October 25th, 2021 to December 31st, 2022. Under the pilot program, this position may be eligible for remote work up to 5 days per pay period pending departmental need and leadership approval. The pilot program may be extended or terminated at any time at the College's discretion.
