Job Function:
The Junior Accountant reports directly to the Financial Specialist. This is a Financial position involving responsibility for accounting records and the preparation of financial reports and reconciliations. Work is performed under supervision with exercise of independent judgement, but in accordance with outlined objectives, policies and procedures. Work involves the use of an automated accounting system. Supervision may be exercised over a small number of employees. Performs related duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepares financial reconciliation and aging reports. Generate month-end reconciliation reports for review by the Financial Specialist and/or Assistant Controller.
- Reconciles accounting activity to ensure it balances to the general ledger. Review, identify and correct discrepancies in accounts.
- Monitor daily cash activity and ensure proper recording of cash transactions.
- Prepares journal vouchers as needed; review journal vouchers prepared by staff and assign journal voucher numbers as required.
- Reconciles College bank statements to College records.
- Reconciles College investment accounts. Prepares journal vouchers for interest accruals, purchase of investments and money market transfers and additional bank transfers as required.
- Prepares and reviews certain month end financial statements including the statement of revenue and expense and balance sheet for financial reporting.
- Prepare year-end reconciliation reports for independent CPA audit review. Prepare monthly and quarterly variance analysis for certain general ledger accounts.
- Monitors and clears system suspense and various clearing accounts.
- Assist in accounting for transactions on student accounts including but not limited to financial aid awards, registration and other transactions on student records.
- Maintain reports in the College's report writing program to ensure that the reports generated are complete and accurate.
- Employs professional knowledge of theories, concepts, principles and practices of accounting and financial management to facilitate financial accounting between departments, third party agencies, system functions and various issues as well as to maintain proper internal controls and satisfy regulatory requirements.
- Provides assistance to supervisor and clerical staff in the performance of standard and routine accounting, related tasks and special assignments as needed.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises Sr. Account Clerk in areas of cash receipts data input, account reconciliation, related reporting and collection of past due accounts.

You must currently hold the title of Junior Accountant, OR meet the following minimum qualifications;
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus EITHER:
- (A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting; OR,
- (B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Economics, Finance or Business Administration that included a minimum of fifteen (15) semester credit hours in accounting; OR,
- (C) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate's degree in Economics, Finance or Business Administration that included a minimum of fifteen (15) semester credit hours in accounting plus one (1) year of full-time or its part-time equivalent paid experience in accounting, auditing or bookkeeping; OR,
- (D) Any equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B) and (C) above.
- Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications under (B) or (C) above must submit a student or official copy of the college transcript or itemized list of course work and credits received, at the time of application.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Must have the ability to write reports and business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from faculty, staff, students and the general public.

Salary: $45,041.54 - $57,480.38

The starting salary for all new hires is typically at the entry-level figure, as determined by the step placement of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
