The Zone Team Member—Northwest Y (Summer)
FLSA Status: Part-time, Non-exempt
Reports To: Youth & Family Program Coordinator
Shifts Available: May 1-August 1; 8:35 am-12:25 pm, 4:35-7:40 pm
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Zone Team Members facilitate play in a safe, enriching environment. We help children develop social skills through positive interactions; physical competencies through gross and fine motor activities; intellectual skills through participation in board and card games, PlayStation/Xbox movement games and language activities; and emotional competencies by feeling accepted and learning to accept others. We offer a safe, quality program as a member service, which supports families in their quest for health and wellness and gives children an environment in which to grow, learn and have fun! Without our support, many families could not use their memberships.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Arrive at the YMCA 10 minutes before your shift. This will give you time to clock in, unlock Zone door and return key before your shift begins.
- Greet parents and children by name when they enter and exit The Zone. If you do not know children’s names, please ask them.
- Actively engage with children by playing games, talking, crafting, etc.
- Be proactive in your movement around the room - Interact with everyone.
- Create a warm and positive atmosphere for the parents and children.
- Responsible for keeping children engaged in activity during their visit to The Zone by promoting and participating in positive play.
- Encourage and assist children in cleaning up craft activities, games, controllers, or anything else they have gotten out.
- Assist in planning, preparing, leading, and cleaning up craft activities, games, stories or movement opportunities.
- Understand and enforce The Zone safety protocol.
- Attend all job related meetings and mandatory trainings.
- Promote a team concept through a positive approach to supervision, communication and interactions with others.
- Maintain ongoing communication with Youth & Family Coordinator.
- Manage program resources responsibly.
- Keep the room and shelves clean and in good order.
- Keep Youth & Family Coordinator informed of parental concerns and schedule changes.
- Demonstrate responsibility by following the schedule, consistently arriving on time for your shifts, and being proactive in securing your own substitute when necessary according to The Zone scheduling and substitution request policy.
- Support The Zone team by being flexible in subbing for shifts.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Age of 16 or older
- Experience with children and/or formal education in early childhood education preferred.
- Must work a minimum of 15 hours per month.
- Must take the following trainings: CPR, Blood Borne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention. Must take these within 30 days of hire and then keep them updated. The YMCA will provide all training.
- Must possess and demonstrate the ability to engage in all activities associated with the daily care and routine of children ages 7-12, including but not limited to: interacting with children at floor level, movement activities, engaging with small or large groups of children, leading/directing activities for large or small groups.
- Must possess oral, auditory, and written communication skills appropriate for interacting with children, parents, and other staff members.
- Able and willing to work as a team member.
- Must possess strong relationship-building skills, communication skills, decision-making skills, and leadership skills.
- Must be able to sit on the floor, get up from the floor, stoop, or kneel at child’s level.
- Must be able to refrain from using cell phone during shift (i.e., social media, texting, phone calls)
