Description of Duties
This position in the Parks Department is responsible for supervising and maintaining the operation and monitoring of the Zoo’s water exhibits and coordinating the maintenance and repair of other Zoo facilities such as sanitary sewer, HVAC, Fire/Safety/Security, etc. Responsibilities involve developing and maintaining a preventive maintenance program to ensure clear water conditions that are free of bacteria and safe for aquatic animal display. The employee reports directly to, and works under the general supervision of, the Zoological Park Supervisor. The employee remains on call for emergencies. General supervision is exercised over Aquatic Life Support Systems Operators and other staff. Does related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus EITHER:
(A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a natural science**, plus three (3) years paid full time or its part time equivalent experience in animal management, one (1) of which shall have involved animals whose habitats included large bodies of water, and one (1) of which shall have involved working with high rate sand filtration systems using CO2 Bromine and Ozone for water quality; OR,
(B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s degree in Biology or a natural science**, plus five (5) years paid full time or its part time equivalent experience in animal management, two (2) of which shall have involved animals whose habitats included large bodies of water, and two (2) of which shall have involved working with high rate sand filtration systems using CO2 Bromine and Ozone for water quality; OR,
(C) Seven (7) years paid full time or its part time equivalent experience in animal management, two (2) of which shall have involved animals whose habitats included large bodies of water, and two (2) of which shall have involved working with high-rate sand filtration systems using CO2 Bromine and Ozone for water quality; OR,
(D) Any equivalent combination within the limits of (A), (B) and (C) above.
**Natural Sciences (physical or biological) include: Biology, Earth Science, Botony, Physics, Chemistry and Zoology and their sub-fields.
