    TITLE: Maintenance I - Second Shift - Masuk High School

    Position Function:

    • Works under the direct supervision of the Principal, Director of Operations, Manager of Buildings and Grounds, and Maintenance Supervisor.
    • Performs general cleaning and maintenance in school buildings and grounds; and provides cleaning and maintenance assistance to students, teachers, visitors and others as necessary.
    • Performs related duties as required.

    Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

    • Opens and/or closes the building, according to the daily schedule.
    • Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways and play areas, neat, clean and safe at all times.
    • Sweeps, scrubs, washes, mops, dusts and otherwise cleans all areas within school facilities.
    • Refinishes and seals floors. Vacuums and shampoos carpets.
    • Requests cleaning supplies before existing supplies are depleted.
    • Stores supplies and equipment in a neat and safe manner.
    • Sets up chairs, tables and other equipment for school performances and events.
    • Does emergency clean-up resulting from breakage, vandalism, spillage or illness.
    • Safely operates a variety of equipment, including but not limited to, floor machines, landscaping equipment, snow removal equipment, etc.
    • Accepts deliveries from vendors. Verifies contents of shipment received and forwards paperwork to the school office.
    • Attends training sessions as assigned.
    • Removes snow and dispenses ice-melt as needed.
    • Responds to emergency situations in school buildings, such as power failure, plumbing, heating, and/or vandalism.
    • Performs maintenance which includes, but is not limited to, assembling furniture, painting, hanging pictures and other items, and replacement of light bulbs, as required.
    • Assists with summer building and grounds maintenance, including but not limited to, lawn mowing, assembling furniture, light repair, cleaning of rooms and furniture, and stripping and waxing of floors.
    • Assists parents and other visitors to school buildings with special events and programs.
    • Performs other related tasks as directed by supervisors.

    Equipment

    • Uses hand tools of trade and related power equipment, including, but not limited to, brooms, mops, floor cleaning and waxing machines, vacuum cleaners, snow blowers, shovels, grounds equipment and hand tools.

    Safety Requirements

    • Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper use of tools and power equipment used in the performance of duties.

    • Wears appropriate safety gear, including masks.
    • Must comply with school district’s chemical hygiene program and follow MSDS sheets.

    Travel Requirements:

    • Occasional travel between schools, or between schools and central office, may be required.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Ability to follow oral or written work orders from supervisor, and to coordinate work with principal and others.
    • Ability to clearly communicate with others.
    • Ability to describe orally or in writing cleaning, maintenance or repair problems as needed.

    • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.

    • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure.
    • Ability to work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.

    • Ability to work above ground from ladders and automatic lifts.
    • Ability to perform work according to standard procedures and schedule set forth by supervisor(s).
    • Ability to use email, maintenance software and general applications like word processors.

    • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

    Work Environment

    • The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions, and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electric shock. The noise in the work environment is moderately loud.

    Qualifications Profile:

    Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:

    • High School Diploma or completion of sufficient education to successfully perform the duties of the position.
    • Previous experience in building and cleaning maintenance desirable.
    • Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator’s license or ability to provide own transportation.
