GENERAL JOB FUNCTION:

The Head Varsity Football Coach is responsible for providing leadership and direction to the district's football programs while instructing participants on the philosophy, methods, and proper physical training involved in football. The coach will promote the sport of football within the community and lead a vision of program building from the youth level through the varsity level. In addition to the above, the Head Coach should establish a goal to encourage a high level of self-discipline and self-confidence in all participants of the sport and ensure that the players value leadership, sportsmanship, and a sense of fair play while representing our school district. The Head Coach, as well as his assistants, will be expected to be a model for appropriate behavior and language while fostering a positive culture. The following list of essential duties should not be interpreted to be all-inclusive.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum high school diploma
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous successful coaching experience
  • Must submit to and pay for a Criminal History Background Check prior to beginning work

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

PRESEASON

  • Responsible for providing a list of anticipated participants to the Athletic Director one week prior to the first practice in order to verify completed physicals and eligibility.
  • Responsible for media preseason publicity regarding the football program.
  • Responsible for arrangements and preparation of field equipment for practice prior to the season.
  • Recommends staff assignments.
  • Responsible for working with the Athletic Director in setting up any preseason scrimmages.
  • A copy of the rules governing the football program will be turned in to the Athletic Director for his review and approval.
  • Arrange with the Athletic Director regarding bus arrivals and departures for all games Directions will be given to the Transportation Supervisor to ensure that the team will arrive at its proper destination.
  • Discuss with the Athletic Director the home game schedule and any special requirements for the determined schedule.
  • Staff meetings should be scheduled to ensure program coordination accesses all levels and to determine standards of evaluation as delineated in the job description.
  • Responsible for seeing that all paperwork regarding eligibility, roster, physicals, and signed athletic codes are turned into the Athletic Director one week prior to the first game.
  • Responsible for arranging equipment issues prior to the season. Additionally, make sure staff has the proper training to ensure that equipment issued fits properly.

IN-SEASON

  • Football conditioning and practices will begin and will be run in accordance with all M.H.S.A.A. regulations. The season will conclude with the completion of the last scheduled regular season of the M.H.S.A.A. playoff game.
  • Has complete charge of the program with regards to its organization and promotion.
  • Responsibility for communicating concerns regarding all equipment and practice facilities to the Athletic Director.
  • Communicate regularly with the Athletic Director on the correct time and place of games.
  • Ensure any athlete who is injured and requires a doctor or physical assistance care must have a release prior to participating in any practice or game. This includes working closely with the athletic trainer who has the authority to hold any athlete from practice or competition.
  • Ability to lift, move, store, and inventory all equipment including but not limited to helmets, pads, etc.
  • Must have the stamina and physical ability necessary to demonstrate football skills and techniques.
  • Knowledge of blood pathogens, and handling and disposal of body fluids.
  • Responsible for reporting results of all games to the media and Athletic Director.
  • Will organize, attend, and conduct each practice at the varsity level.
  • Is in charge of the bus conduct of his players on all out-of-town trips and will ride the bus to and from away games.
  • Is responsible for all levels of the football program and should meet periodically with all assistant coaches to ensure program development and coordination during the season.
  • Responsible for locker room supervision before and after practices and games.
  • Check academic and behavioral progress of players weekly.
  • Is expected to behave in a professional manner that is conducive to the development of the student-athlete in his charge. By way of illustration and not by limitation, this behavior would be such where game officials are dealt with in a courteous manner; unethical procedures are never used in an attempt to "win the game"; the student athlete's welfare always receives primary consideration; Positive student behavior is encouraged and negative behavior is discouraged.
  • Teaching duties shall take precedence over coaching responsibilities.

OTHER DUTIES

  • Assist students in obtaining athletic/educational opportunities for post high school education.
  • Encourage and maintain communication with all booster groups supporting the football program.
  • Establish a good working relationship with teaching staff and communicate the needs of students experiencing academic difficulties.
  • Promote morale and team spirit and take a professional interest in players.
  • Must stress safety, good sportsmanship, and the values of athletics.
  • Responsible for carrying out and enforcing all school policies, regulations, all M.H.S.A.A. regulations, and any duty assigned by the Athletic Director.
  • Assist in fundraising efforts as needed and requested.
  • Implement and operate an appropriate weight training program in cooperation with the Athletic Director and Physical Education teacher(s).
  • Promote and emphasize the importance of football players being multi-sport athletes.
  • Maintain a professional awareness of developments and programs in football.
  • Should be able to command the respect of players, student body, faculty, community, and fellow coaches.
  • Must be able to work with and get along with others.
  • Other duties as assigned.
