The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is recruiting a Human Resource Generalist in Missoula or Kalispell. The Human Resources Generalist partners with leadership and manages the day-to-day operations of human resources for the Missoula District. The HR Generalist manages the application of the human resources policies, procedures, and programs to ensure consistency and compliance with federal, state, and collective bargaining contracts. This position consults, advises, and partners with management on personnel issues, contract interpretation, performance management, recruitment and selection, discipline, drug testing, workforce development, employee relations, training, worker’s compensation and safety. This position serves as the human resources subject matter expert and primary resource for the district. This position reports to the Human Resources Manager and does not supervise others. This position is part of a career ladder with career advancement opportunities.

Required Education And Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business or Public Administration, Human Resources, Communications or a closely related field; and
  • Three (3) years of human resources related experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:



  • The position requires an advanced knowledge of the principles and practices of Human Resource Management and Public Administration. This includes knowledge of state and federal employment laws; labor relations; drug testing; laws and rules governing labor-management relations; contract negotiation techniques.

    • The position requires knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction. The position requires knowledge of the principles and practices of public relations and business communications, and presentation and technical writing methods and techniques.

    • This position may be located in the Missoula or Kalispell.
    • The successful candidate must pass a name-based background investigation as a condition of employment.
    • Driver’s record will be verified. Successful applicants will be required to sign a release form which authorizes the Department to obtain the applicant’s permanent driving records. Compliance with Mont. Admin. R. 2.6.201, "State Vehicle Use," and MDT Policy #6.03.001, "State Vehicle Use Policy" are conditions of employment.
