The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) has a career opportunity as a Direct Care Supervisor at MCDC.

Direct Care Supervisoris a Registered Nurse who is responsible for supervising nursing services for MCDC after normal business hours. Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, monitoring and evaluating nursing services, providing immediate assistance when needed, client care consultation, and problem solving and decision-making during crisis situations. This role also can entail coordinating and reviewing unusual incidents, patient grievances, complaints, and allegations of abuse. This position provides direct supervision for professional registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and treatment technicians.

Major Duties or Responsibilities:

Care Management

  • Establishes, monitors, and evaluates facility services for patient treatment units and detoxification beds. Provides immediate assistance and decision-making during crisis and high-risk situations.
  • Ensures the provision and documentation, within statutory or facility defined time limits, of individualized nursing assessments, care planning, implementation of patient care and treatment, evaluation of treatment, and revision of care plans to ensure quality services are provided in the treatment program.
  • Monitors the compliance with Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services (CMS) regulations and Montana Chemical Dependency Center policies and procedures.
  • Manages the patient admission process during off duty hours by monitoring intake of patients by treatment technicians and medical admissions by nursing staff.
  • Oversees and manages duties and responsibilities of treatment technicians as defined in facility operating procedures and/or protocols.
  • Oversees nursing staff when discussing patient care with DON and on-call provider when attempting to coordinate treatment to ensure attainment of desired medical and/or behavioral outcomes.
  • Responds and follows up on significant events, patient grievances, complaints and allegations of abuse as appropriate by reviewing records and conducting investigative interviews to ensure the provision of patient rights in collaboration with facility management.
  • Performs direct patient care, as needed, within the scope of licensure, in order to support the night shift staff.
  • Ensures all medications and pharmaceuticals are maintained, administered, and documented in accordance with State and Federal regulations, and is responsible for follow up of medication errors.

Direct Supervision of Treatment Staff

  • Serves as the supervising nurse to coordinate facility activities and provide overall management of facility.
  • Intervenes and instructs nursing staff and/ or treatment technicians concerning resident care and unit policies and/or procedures.
  • Schedules nursing staff and/ or treatment technicians to ensure staffing standards by contacting available staff and making appropriate changes on schedule sheet.
  • Trains, orientate, evaluate, and manages employees to maintain viable nursing and treatment technician performance to ensure quality care and a therapeutic environment. Participates in the hiring and corrective action process for employees under their direct supervision.
  • Manages staff concerns, complaints, or interactions on a supervisory level. Participates in the employee grievance resolution process as directed.

Administrative Duties

  • Audits patient files for completeness and ensures all relevant and required documentation is present.
  • When necessary, reviews admissions packets for required documentation and provides recommendations for either confirmation or denial of client.
  • Participates in the development, revision, and implementation of MCDC policy and procedures as needs dictate.
  • Manages all personnel documentation, such as payroll, file updates, and employment related paperwork for assigned direct reports.
  • Participates in labor discussions, negotiations, and decision making as needed.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Performs other duties as may be required.

Physical and Environmental Demands: Physical activities including standing, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, and twisting. Ability to deal appropriately with residents who may be verbally and physically aggressive. The ability to engage and work with often volatile individuals, making critical decisions when required. May be exposed to blood borne pathogens. Walking, standing and sitting for variable periods of time. May occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.

Supervision:

The number of employees supervised is approximately 8. Positions supervised are Registered Nurses and Treatment Technicians.


Qualifications for this Career Opportunity

Required for the first day of work:

  • Knowledge of nursing, medications, and treatment planning.
  • Knowledge of patients' rights regarding medical treatment.
  • Ability to direct personnel.
  • Ability to identify problems, develop and implement solutions.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):

  • Bachelor's degree as a Registered Nurse.
  • Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Montana.
  • Two years of professional nursing experience.
  • One year of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Other combinations of directly related education and experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
