What are the responsibilities and job description for the Graduate Research Assistant in Snow Mechanics position at Montana State University-Bozeman?
Seeking graduate research assistants at the MS and/or PhD level who are interested in applying engineering mechanics principles to snow at Montana State University (MSU). Opportunities to conduct experiments in MSU's Subzero Research Laboratory as well as the field. Topics include but are not limited to vehicle mobility on snow, avalanches, rain-on-snow, wet snow, granular mechanics, instrumentation development, and cryoseismology. There is ample freedom for the graduate student to influence the direction of the research project.
The MSU Subzero Research Laboratory (http://www.montana.edu/subzero/) is a world-class suite of lab facilities for research on cold regions and cold materials. The lab includes eight cold rooms and a variety of instruments for mechanical testing and microstructural characterization.
Montana State University has maintained an international reputation in the fields of snow and ice mechanics since the early 1950’s, when veterans of the U.S. Army 10th Mountain Division settled in the area. MSU is located in Bozeman, Montana, an extended community of about 70,000, nestled in the Rocky Mountains in Southwest Montana. Bozeman is renowned for year-round recreational and cultural opportunities that include access to world class ski areas, multiple blue ribbon trout streams and the Gallatin National Forest, with Yellowstone National Park just 90 miles away. The regional airport located just outside of Bozeman is served by several national airlines connecting to cities and major airport hubs.
Qualifications
BS/MS in an engineering discipline such as mechanical, civil, applied mathematics, or electrical is preferred. A background in disciplines such as (geo)physics, seismology, acoustics, and hydrology will also be considered.
