What are the responsibilities and job description for the Clinical Resource Registered Nurse (CRRN) part-time position at Montana State University Northern?
The Clinical Resource Registered Nurse (CRRN) has a unique and essential role in the lab and clinical education of nursing students, while creating an opportunity to make a difference in the transition from classroom to patient care. The CRRN is used to enhance, but not replace, nursing faculty-directed clinical and skills lab learning experiences. The CRRN is an RN who provides guidance, demonstration, and collaborative evaluation of student performance in the laboratory setting.
Duties and Responsibilities
Key CRRN duties including but are not limited to the following:
Key liaison for laboratory skills preparation, including but not limited to inventory, maintaining and ordering lab equipment and supplies;- Facilitates clinical experiences by correlating didactic theory and content into clinical practice.
- Facilitate the lab environment so that it is ready and conducive to student learning;
- Conduct open lab practice sessions;
- Assist students in the laboratory during hybrid courses when faculty are broadcasting from another location;
- Tutor students with: 1) Drug Calculations and 2) Nursing Skills in Open Lab. The PRRN or CRRN will have excellent interpersonal skills and be current in nursing practice. This tutor should have a positive attitude towards students;
The supervising faculty member is responsible for all nursing students in the clinical setting, including those supervised by the CRRN. The maximum number of nursing students a CRRN may supervise at any one time is ten. The CRRN is responsible for the students and must have not have concurrent clinical responsibilities. The CRRN may also be assigned to monitor students assigned to a preceptor in selected clinical settings.

Supervising Faculty
When using a CRRNs, Faculty member remains responsible for:
- Assuring that assigned duties are appropriate to the CRRN scope of responsibilities;
- Ensuring safe, accessible, and appropriate supervision based on client health status, care setting, course objectives, and student level of preparation;
- The lecture, laboratory, and clinical portion of a course, including actively teaching in the course for which the lab experience is assigned; and
- Performing the summative clinical evaluation based on individual course objectives and student lab performance (MT-BON 24.159.666)
- CRRN is required to have a current unencumbered Montana Registered Nurse license
- A minimal of three-years work experience as a RN in a clinical setting
- Work experience in a nursing skills’ learning lab and/or simulation lab
- Demonstrated proficiency using nursing technology
- BSN degree from an accredited university or college
- Maintain an established work schedule may include occasional evenings and weekends
- Effectively use interpersonal and communications skills, including tact and diplomacy as well as work with diverse student and faculty populations
- Effectively use organizational and planning skill with attention to detail and follow through
- Remain calm and logical, and follow established procedures in emergency situations
- Provide assistance to students and faculty in the lab environment
- Promote and ensure safe lab practices
- Maintain confidentiality of work-related information based upon FERPA
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships
1. The individual meets, with or without reasonable accommodation, the minimal essential job functions identified as Specific Nursing Functional Expectations. The CRRN is required to possess the functional level of ability to perform the duties required of a registered nurse, which include but not limited to the following: sensory perceptions (visual, auditory, tactile, and olfactory), communication, cognitive/critical thinking, motor function (stand, stoop, bend, walk, push/pull/carry heavy objects, move and position clients, fine and gross motor skills, maintain balance from any position). In addition, Occasional lifting of objects up to 50 pounds.
