What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of the Library position at Montana State University Northern?
The Director of the Library is responsible for the overall operation and supervision of the Vande Bogart Library. The Director will provide an innovative vision for the library space and programming and support that vision with leadership.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Director of the Library has authority and is accountable for the following:
- Plan and develop quality library resources, spaces, and services appropriate to the instructional, research and public service needs of the college and the community.
- Adapt the library’s services, spaces, and resources as new developments in library science occurs.
- Develop and implement procedures promoting effective utilization of library resources, services for students, faculty and other members of the college community.
- Prepare and administer the annual budgets for the operation of the library services.
- Encourage and support collaboration between faculty and the library.
- Serve on campus and statewide committees and task forces.
- Participate in identifying personnel positions that enhance the library operation and provide supervision of hired personnel.
- Prepare reports, surveys, studies and analyses of Library services.
- Work with the Provost, Dean, Chairs, Faculty and Student Government to integrate the library in the academic pursuits of the institution.
- Maintain professional relations with other units of Montana University System and with regional and national organizations.
- Work with the Executive Director of the Foundation, other campus and community entities to identify potential funding sources for the Library.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
- Work hours may include evening and weekend hours.
- Master’s in Library Science (MLS), Master’s in Library Information Studies (MLIS), or closely related discipline from an ALA-accredited institution
- Demonstrated increasingly responsible professional library experience
- Library work experience in higher education settings.
- Demonstrated use of effective, innovative practices in a library setting.
- Experience with archives or museum collections.
- Demonstrated history of collaboration with libraries outside of higher education such as public libraries, school libraries and special libraries such as state libraries, law libraries, and hospital libraries.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Experience working with faculty in developing academic curriculum.
- Strong background in planning and assessment of library services.
- Experience with higher education accreditation methods and initiatives.
- Experience with instructional technologies and support for in-person, blended, and remote/online learning.
- Demonstrated experience working within complex budgetary systems.
- Experience fostering a collegial working environment and building consensus.
- Demonstrated organizational skills.
With or without reasonable accommodations, the director should be able to work in a library environment that includes a virtual and online presence as well as a physical library with books, computer and learning spaces. Be able to lift up to 50 lbs occaisonally.
