Clinical Laboratory Assistant/Phlebotomist

The Phlebotomist position in the clinical laboratory of Medical Services, part of the department of Student Health Services within the division of Student Success.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs essential laboratory procedures.
  • Verifies laboratory test requests.
  • Confirms patient identification.
  • Collects blood specimens through venipuncture.
  • Monitors glucose levels via point-of-care testing.
  • Collects throat and nasopharyngeal specimens.
  • Performs COVID specimen collections.
  • Instructs patients on proper sample collection techniques.
  • May also perform waived laboratory testing as needed.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Phlebotomy experience, including proficiency in venipuncture.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a busy healthcare environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and sound judgment.
  • Professional demeanor and strong communication skills.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA regulations and privacy guidelines.
  • Ability to follow safety standards and maintain a healthy work environment.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Experience working in a college health or similar outpatient setting.
  • Experience with point-of-care testing and specimen collection procedures (e.g., nasopharyngeal swabs, throat swabs).
  • Knowledge of electronic health record (EHR) systems and laboratory information systems.
  • Certification in Phlebotomy or other relevant laboratory skills.
  • Experience performing waived laboratory testing.

The Successful Candidate Will
  • Proven phlebotomy experience.
  • Demonstrates excellent attention to detail.
  • Possess the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
  • Maintains a professional demeanor at all times, following safety and privacy guidelines.
  • Collaborates effectively with the healthcare team.
