Brief Position Overview :

The Diversity & Inclusion Student Commons (DISC) and Montana State University is seeking a highly energetic and organized professional to support students and other members of the institution. The DISC is one of the most dynamic and engaged offices on campus. We promote inclusion and understanding of difference, support students from underrepresented identity groups, and encourage critical thinking about diversity topics.

General Statement :

The mission of the Diversity & Inclusion Student Commons (DISC) is to increase understanding, promote inclusion, and inspire critical thinking about diversity, as well as to provide support for students who identify with a wide range of diverse identity groups. The DISC is a unit of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. The Managing Director reports to the Senior Diversity and Inclusion Officer.

The Managing Director provides expertise on issues of access, equity, diversity and inclusion regarding student support services, community building, professional development best practices, and practical applications.

This position requires an understanding of the relevance of racial / ethnic identity, social justice theories, and student development theories, and an ability to work effectively with individuals and groups from a variety of identities, cultures, backgrounds and ideologies in a compassionate, culturally competent manner.

The Managing Director is responsible for bringing knowledge of student diversity and identity issues to conversations concerning the campus-wide community. The Managing Director is responsible for building partnerships across campus and providing information to the university community related to diversity and inclusion. The Managing Director develops and manages programs and events that serve underrepresented groups of MSU students and fosters an inclusive community.

Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Coordinate and oversee direct support services to MSU students identifying with a wide range of underrepresented identities

Develop and implement programs to support underrepresented and / or marginalized students, and foster a sense of community and belonging among students

  • Oversee the student commons space, including coordination of community building activities and the facilitation of an inclusive space
  • Offer opportunities for students across a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences to engage in dialogue with each other
  • Create opportunities for students to develop skills around inclusive leadership, change management, and dialogue facilitation
  • Oversee recruitment and training of student employees, volunteers, and diversity and inclusion ambassadors
  • Provide coordination of student diversity and inclusion ambassadors
  • Provide individual and department- or unit-wide consultation to faculty and staff working with underrepresented students
  • Act as a front-line resource to any student in need of support with any diversity related issues / challenges through advising and mentoring in a safe and supportive one-on-one setting and / or making referrals to other university units
  • Build connections with student organizations and other campus units to develop coordinated support
  • Oversee the development and implementation of trainings, initiatives, and events to advance understanding of diversity and inclusion across the university
  • Actively work to create a campus culture that is welcoming to and inclusive of all identity groups

  • Develop a strong, dedicated, visible network of support for and among students through highly collaborative institutional efforts in diversity & inclusion and student success
  • Provide information and support to the university community in the areas of multicultural awareness, community building, diversity education, inclusive leadership, cross-cultural dialogue, and practical resources relating to diversity issues
  • Provide professional development to campus partners and student organizations
  • Develop curricula and deliver regular formal trainings for campus constituents, including Residence Life, Admissions, University Police, Center for Faculty Excellence and numerous academic departments
  • Oversee strategic planning and budget management
  • Develop annual and long-term strategic plans for the office

  • Manage the DISC budget
  • Monitor all expenditures and financial records
  • Secondary duties assigned to this position :

  • Foster relationships and collaborative partnerships with other student success units, campus partners and members of the Diversity & Inclusion Council to aid in the advancement of diversity initiatives, strategic diversity goals, and improved institutional and student outcomes.
  • Assess student diversity and inclusion efforts, including tracking and reporting of student demographics, program impacts, and success rates; tracking financial commitments to support student inclusion
  • Hire, train, supervise and provide leadership to the DISC graduate assistants and several student employees
  • Work in close collaboration with the Senior Diversity & Inclusion Officer (SDIO) to align with university-wide priorities and programmatic progress relevant to student diversity and success
  • Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills :

  • Combination of education and / or applicable experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Sociology, Psychology, Multicultural Affairs or other related field or 2 years of professional experience working with diversity / multicultural issues on a college or university campus
  • Demonstrated strong facilitation and conflict resolution skills
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse students or populations.
  • Demonstrated program, project and event management skills
  • Successful experience completing complex tasks, independently, with minimal supervision
  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills :

  • Combination of education and / or applicable experience equivalent to a Master’s Degree in Adult & Higher Education, Multicultural Affairs or other related field
  • Experience working in a campus setting with students of color and LGBTQ students
  • Experience working with a dialogue or a dialogue-intensive program
  • Experience advocating and building a campus consensus to improve outcomes
  • The Successful Candidate Will :

  • Embraces diversity as a collective campus strength and effectively brings a diverse perspective to relevant campus and community discussions
  • Possess the ability to synthesize complex information into more digestible pieces that others can understand
  • Position Special Requirements / Additional Information :

    Work is typically performed in a normal office environment. There are, however, recurring and frequent early / late and weekend hours required. Limited travel is required.
