What are the responsibilities and job description for the Outdoor Recreation Rental Shop Coordinator position at Montana State University?
The Outdoor Recreation Program (ORP) at Montana State University is part of a dynamic and growing Campus Rec Team. As part of Campus Recreation, the ORP provides support to all MSU students who are interested in learning more about outdoor adventure. We work with a variety of other entities on and off campus to help connect MSU students to all the outdoor recreation opportunities that exist in Southwest Montana. We are seeking to grow our outreach and engagement efforts to the greater campus community.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Outdoor Recreation Rental Shop Coordinator will provide day to day oversight and support for the Outdoor Recreation Program’s Equipment Rental Program and the Bike and Ski Repair shops. The Rental Shop Coordinator will also provide logistic support to Outdoor Recreation Programs, mentor student staff, maintain and purchase additional equipment as needed, and support the general business functions of the program and Campus Rec. Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Equipment Rental Shop oversight and student staff development
- Bike and Ski Repair Shop oversight
- Supporting risk management for student led programs
- Collaborative problem solving of workflow and logistics management for the Outdoor Recreation Program
- Curriculum development and assessment
- Marketing and recruit for Rental shop services with an emphasis on supporting on campus students.
- Scheduling of student staff
- Participation in Campus Rec departmental goals and initiatives
- Ability to move a backpack up to 50% of body weight over varied terrain
- Other Duties as assigned
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
- Associates degree in relevant field (Education, Recreation, Business, Sociology/Psychology, Health and Human Development) or Bachelors degree plus 1 years of experience in a relevant field, or a combination of education and/or applicable experience.
- Wilderness First Responder Certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
- Demonstrated experience working with/mentoring college students and/or young adults in an outdoor education setting.
- Demonstrated experience managing complex logistics in a dynamic and fast paced environment.
- Demonstrated experience working in an equipment rental and/or retail service environment.
- Demonstrated ability managing either bike or ski maintenance programs.
- Demonstrated experience managing Point of Sale operations.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
- Certification as an instructor in any of the following outdoor skills: avalanche education, canoeing, kayak/rafting/swift water rescue, rock/ice climbing, wilderness medicine, mountain biking.
- Masters Degree in Outdoor Recreation, Education, or other relevant field.
- Demonstrated experience facilitating college outdoor experiential/adventure programs.
- Demonstrated oversight of outdoor/adventure programs risk management.

- Demonstrate a high degree of understanding of risk management and be able to teach principles of risk management.
