What are the responsibilities and job description for the Rural Youth and Community Specialist position at Montana State University?
The mission of the Center for Research on Rural Education (CRRE) is to respond to the pressing concerns of small, rural, and remote schools and communities across Montana, the nation, and the world through carefully designed service and research. The CRRE is home to multiple grant funded projects focused on reducing the critical shortage of teachers and counselors in rural Montana and increasing mental health literacy for Montana’s students across the state.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversee implementation, assessment, reporting and outreach of YAM and related programs, services, and outcomes.
- Secure ongoing grant funding to support YAM and related program delivery.
- Manage program finances including budget, expenditures, sales, and services.
- Provide direction for short-term and long-range strategic planning.
- Build ongoing partnerships to serve Montana schools and communities.
- Coordinate and provide logistical support for Instructor training, Assistant training, program delivery, and related events, workshops, and educational conferences across Montana.
- Deliver YAM and related programs to middle/high school students as needed.
- Manage contracted YAM and related trainers, instructors, and assistants.
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
- Master’s degree in Curriculum & Instruction, Education Leadership or a related field.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience as a teacher/administrator in rural schools and communities.
- Certification as a YAM Trainer through Mental Health in Mind Karolinska Institute – Stockholm, Sweden
- A record of progressively responsible program management including experience conducting instructor trainings, program delivery, and serving as MSU liaison with rural schools and communities.
- A record of progressively responsible grant management including experience preparing and monitoring grant budgets and financial reports with a high level of accuracy.
- Experience using computerized word processing software and spreadsheets.
- Ability to organize and prioritize program-related workload and deadlines and handle complex situations while working under minimal supervision.
- Ability to conduct long-term strategic planning.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
- Demonstrated interest in rural education, youth mental health literacy, and community engagement.
- Knowledge of educational policies and systems particular to Montana.
- Knowledge of rural schools and communities and related education issues.
- Experience in collecting data for research studies.

- Coordinate and implement all aspects (arrangements, logistics, travel, preparation, supervision, and data collection) for YAM and related grant program delivery.
- Represent CRRE and MSU in a professional and courteous manner.
Position Special Requirements/Additional Information
Continued employment will be contingent upon continued grant funding.
Travel within Montana will be required.
