What are the responsibilities and job description for the Grocery Store Manager position at Montbello Talent?
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced retail leader to help shape store operations and further our mission of providing healthy, affordable food access from day one. As the Director of Operations for a brand-new nonprofit grocery store, you will be responsible for creating a positive, welcoming, and high-performing operation that will have a significant impact on communities across Denver.
This role will initially involve directly managing our first store, with the opportunity to expand into a multi-unit oversight position as additional locations open. You will have the autonomy to develop processes, hire and train a strong team, and ensure both operational excellence and mission delivery. The Director of Operations will oversee a store team of 10–12 employees and report directly to the CEO/Executive Director.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and Manage Process
- Collaborate with grocery consultants to create all processes and SOPs for the store (ordering, receiving, inventory management, cash register operations, customer service, etc.).
- Establish the operating manual for how current and future stores will run.
- Customer Experience and Standards
- Oversee and elevate customer service, ensuring every customer is treated with respect.
- Work with your team to identify and implement creative methods to improve sales, merchandising, processes, cost reduction, signage, customer count, average transaction, and sales per person hour.
- Team Building, Coaching & Development
- Foster a positive, performance-driven culture centered on respect and high standards.
- Recognize that people are your most valuable resource and invest in their development through coaching, training, and hands-on learning opportunities.
- Hold your team accountable, hire effectively, and support professional growth at all levels.
- Optimize Processes
- Collaborate with store leadership to refine and implement operational systems that maintain and improve quality standards over time.
- Maximize Financial Performance
- Develop and manage budgets for the retail and kitchen operations, meeting or exceeding financial targets.
- New Store Openings
- Play a crucial role in sourcing equipment, hiring, training, and overall setup of new store locations.
- Transition from direct store management to multi-unit oversight as additional stores open.
Requirements
- Passion for DFMC’s mission to expand access to healthy, affordable food across Denver.
- Proven experience managing multi-unit retail grocery or a similar retail environment (or equivalent experience).
- Highly self-motivated and comfortable creating new processes in a startup setting.
- Flexible schedule, including availability for early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
- Hands-on leadership approach, with a focus on enhancing store and kitchen operations.
- Demonstrated success in building high-performing teams, with a passion for coaching and training.
- Strong interpersonal skills and comfort working with people of diverse backgrounds, skills, and experience levels.
- Experience effectively managing budgets.
- Entrepreneurial mindset; comfortable with ambiguity, change, and growth in a startup environment.
- Appreciation for high standards as the foundation of team success.

- Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and lift up to 50 lbs.
