GENERAL PURPOSE
On an as-needed basis only, under general supervision, provides instruction and tutors individual and small groups of students in assigned special education programs with emotional, physical, behavioral and mental disabilities in various subject-matter areas to reinforce classroom lessons; observes, monitors and records student performance and behavior; performs administrative functions in support of classroom activities; and performs related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
An Instructional Assistant - Special Education (As-Needed) performs the same functions as a permanent Instructional Assistant - Special Education on a temporary basis only in the absence of a permanent incumbent. The as-needed assignment will end upon the return to duty of the permanent Instructional Assistant - Special Education employee. Placement in the as-needed pool for this classification may certify out his/her test scores for placement on an eligibility list for a permanent position in accordance with the Merit system provisions of the State Education Code. The Instructional Assistant - Special Education (As-Needed) will remain at the first step of the appropriate salary schedule.
Instructional Assistants – Special Education are responsible for providing, under the guidance and direction of a classroom teacher, instruction and tutoring on various subjects to students with emotional, physical, behavioral or mental disabilities in assigned special education programs. Work assigned to an Instructional Assistant – Special Education requires knowledge of subject areas applicable to an area of assignment and the ability to provide instruction to students with disabilities in an effective manner.
§ Instructional Assistants – Special Education are distinguished from Instructional Assistants in that incumbents in the former class are assigned to work with students with emotional, physical, behavioral and mental disabilities. Education, Training, and Experience:
1. Graduation from high school.
2. One (1) year of experience working with special education children in an organized setting.
3. Or some combination of education, training and experience that produces the requisite knowledge and ability.
Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
1. Some assignments may require the ability to speak and write in a designated second language.
2. On January 8, 2002 the new Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA P.L. 107-110 was signed. Paraprofessionals who assist in classroom instruction and are hired using Title I funds after January 8, 2002 must meet the following requirements:
§ Complete two years of higher education study, OR
§ Obtain an Associate's or higher degree, OR
§ Pass a formal state or local academic assessment that demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching reading, writing, and mathematics or reading, writing, and mathematics readiness.
