Job Summary :
Under limited supervision, support the Aquarium’s financial operations by assisting in the analysis and modeling of revenue streams, expenses, and overall financial performance. Report to the Director of Financial Planning & Analysis and collaborate with the Senior Financial Analyst, accounting team, and diverse Aquarium departments year-round. Demonstrate financial management leadership through monthly analysis, forecasting support, delivering training to enhance financial literacy, and providing budget leadership within assigned units. Support the management and optimization of financial systems to enhance data accuracy, reporting capabilities, and operational efficiency. Collaborate with finance colleagues to lead the development and updating of finance policies and procedures, creating training modules to promote staff understanding and compliance. Conduct periodic reviews to ensure the Aquarium adheres to financial and operational policies. Support the preparation of reports and presentations for leadership and Board members. Perform other duties as required.

- Take ownership of the financial planning and analysis function by :
Delivering the Annual Budget : Oversee the end-to-end development and delivery of the annual budget, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and financial objectives.
Driving Revenue and Expense Excellence : Lead comprehensive evaluations of revenue streams to identify growth opportunities while developing precise expense models to enable accurate forecasting and effective budget creation.Empowering Strategic Decisions : Deliver high-impact analyses of financial performance to guide strategic initiatives and organizational success.Provide financial leadership to assigned units :Identify areas of concern by conducting in depth financial analysis; recommend options for course corrections
Guide and assist in the preparation and maintenance of annual budgets and forecasts to anticipate future financial performance and requirements.Support compliance with organizational policies, donor requirements, and regulatory standards in all financial activities, and provide compliance and financial literacy training as needed.Deliver essential technical systems support to ensure the smooth operation and accuracy of financial systems, addressing issues and optimizing processes as needed.Identify gaps in current financial policies and procedures, create new policies to address them, and maintain existing policies.Develop and deliver training modules designed to enhance the financial skills essential for Aquarium budget managers, in collaboration with the finance team. These modules will equip them to effectively perform budgeting, project management, and ensure compliance with Aquarium financial policies.Assist in creating Board packages by conducting financial analysis, preparing variance narratives, and generating ad hoc reports for the Board. Collaborate with the Board team to organize file names and document order, ensuring the seamless assembly and distribution of the finance package for review by the Finance Committee and Board of Directors.Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs) :
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related discipline or equivalent combination of education, training or experience5-10 years of experience as an Accountant and or Analyst in a non-profit environmentDemonstrated ability to collaborate with and influence cross-departmental teams, including those working remotelyCPA a plusSolid understanding of general accounting conceptsAdvanced proficiency in Excel and other financial computational, reporting, and visualization toolsAttention to detail and commitment to producing accurate and well-organized workAble to independently initiate and drive tasks forward, with a proactive approach to problem-solving, while also recognizing when to seek assistance or guidanceComfortable with ambiguity and scenario planningProficient in Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint & other Microsoft applicationsAbility to multi-task and execute under pressureKnowledge of Sage Intacct, Concur, Adaptive, Fundriver, Salesforce, Asana & Tessitura a plusAbility to work within, and maintain Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Core ValuesPhysical Requirements to Perform Essential Job Functions :
