WHO WE ARE

The Montgomery County Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (DOCR) is responsible for the intake, reception and assessment functions including law enforcement processing of adult male and female offenders arrested in Montgomery County. Responsibility also includes the custody and care of male and female offenders who are either detained in a pretrial status or serving sentences less than 18 months. In addition to comprehensive facility case management, the Inmate Services section provides a wide range of correctional services and programs to incarcerated individuals including education, workforce development, substance abuse treatment, cognitive behavioral modification programs, reentry and life skills programs, faith-based supports, and library services.

What You'll Be Doing

The Promotional Bulletin will be distributed internally to DOCR employees, to outline the requirements for promotion and the examination procedure for the rank of Correctional Supervisor – Sergeant.

To participate in the 2025 promotional examinations for this rank, candidates must apply by 11:59 pm., April 30, 2025.

It is the candidate's responsibility to meet the application deadline. No applications will be accepted after the deadline. No paper applications will be accepted. If you have any questions or problems applying DOCR internal contact information will be provided within the promotional bulletin.

Minimum Qualifications

To be eligible to participate in the 2025 promotional process for Montgomery County Correctional Supervisor – Sergeant, prospective candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications:


Experience:
A candidate must currently be a Montgomery County Correctional Officer III-Corporal with two (2) years of satisfactory experience as a Montgomery County Correctional Officer III- Corporal as of the closing date of this promotional bulletin on April 30, 2025.

Education:
Completion of high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland.

Equivalency: None.

License:

  • Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver’s license from the applicant's state of residence.
  • Possession of State of Maryland Correctional Officer Certification.
  • Firearms Certification.
  • First Aid, CPR, and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) Certification.
  • Note: There will be no substitutions for this section.


Medical
:

To be promoted, a promotional candidate must have successfully completed/passed the most recent periodic medical examination.

At the recommendation of either the Department Director, or the Employee Medical Examiner, a special promotional medical examination may be required.

Preferred Criteria, Interview Preferences

The promotional examinations for the rank of Correctional Supervisor - Sergeant will consist of a written multiple-choice examination and an assessment center. Only those individuals who achieve the announced passing score or better on the written multiple-choice examination will be scheduled for the assessment center.

The passing score of the written examination will be announced no later than the day before the written examination administration. Only those individuals who achieve the announced passing score at or above that score on the written examination will be scheduled for the assessment center. The passing score for participating in the oral exam could be less than 70% but will not be above 70%.


Each promotional candidate who meets the minimum qualifications as stated in this bulletin will receive a written notice to report for the examination process, giving the location and time scheduled.


Note
: Prior to a promotional appointment within DOCR, the selected individual must answer the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) questions and submit to a criminal history to comply with the Prevention Planning on Hiring and Promotion Decisions (115.17, 115.117, 115.217, 115.317). This is a requirement to meet Federal law and audit standards.

Montgomery County Ethics Law: Except as provided by law or regulation, the County's "Public Employees" (which does not include employees of the Sheriff's office) are subject to the County's ethics law including the requirements to obtain advanced approval of any outside employment and the prohibitions on certain outside employment.
