About the Position

WHO WE ARE

The Office of the County Council is seeking a non-merit Public Administrative Associate to support office, District 7 representative. The position will perform a variety of legislative duties relating to office and constituent services.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

The ideal candidate will have a detail-oriented approach, focus on organization, and ability to manage and to respond to changing work priorities in a fast-paced legislative environment.

This is a term position scheduled to expire on December 2, 2025. Continued employment is contingent on regular renewal of the term (all positions in Councilmember offices are term positions).

What You'll Be Doing

Key Responsibilities :

  • Organizing and promoting public events, town halls, community meetings, and public appearances for Councilmember representing approximately 150,000 residents;
  • Researching and drafting briefing memos, talking points, and preparatory materials for Councilmember;
  • Supporting communications, scheduling, and constituent outreach efforts of the Chief of Staff and Constituent Services Manager, including social media, press releases, letters of congratulations to constituents, certificates, and proclamations;
  • Researching and responding to inquiries from constituents, residents' groups, County government officials and business organizations;
  • Using and maintaining databases; and
  • Representing the Councilmember in meetings and at public events.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience : None

Education : Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree.

Equivalency : An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

Preferred Criteria, Interview Preferences

All applicants will be reviewed by OHR for minimum qualifications. Those applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be rated "Qualified," placed on the Referred List, and may be considered for interview. Employees meeting minimum qualifications who are the same grade or higher will be placed on the Referred List as a "Transfer" candidate and may be considered for an interview.

The applications of those individuals meeting the minimum qualifications will be reviewed to determine the extent, relevancy of training, and experience in the following areas :

  • Experience in public affairs, organizing, political campaigning, event management, or legislative affairs broadly;
  • Experience in setting priorities and organizing work assignments within deadlines;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and elected officials;
  • Experience in working effectively with constituents, community groups, and nonprofit organizations;
  • Experience with or ability to learn : Google Suite, Zoom, Microsoft Office Products including Teams, constituent correspondence systems (Indigov / IQ), Canva, and social media applications; and
  • The ability to draft or edit correspondence, proclamations, and certificates on behalf of the Councilmember

    Leave Benefits

    Our generous leave package starts with non-MLS permanent and term employees earning 15 days of sick leave and 15 days of annual leave in their first year, as well as up to three additional personal days each calendar year. Positions in MLS earn 35 days of paid time off each year. In addition, we offer all employees 10 paid holidays.     Retirement Benefits

    All permanent and term positions are eligible for robust retirement plans. Public safety positions are eligible for a defined benefit pension plan in which they are vested after only five years. Employees in non-public safety positions can participate in retirement plans that contribute up to 12 percent of their annual salary. All employees can also participate in a supplemental retirement plan, the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, to contribute even more to their retirement goals.

    Tuition Assistance & Student Loan Forgiveness

    Montgomery County employees are eligible to participate in the Federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Participants who meet all requirements may qualify for forgiveness on the remaining balance on their Direct Loans after making 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan while working full-time in a qualifying public service position.     Free Mass Transit Benefit

    County employees are entitled to use the RideOn Bus service for free with a valid County-employee ID. This benefit can be used any time of the day or evening, including weekends.
