The Montgomery County School Board, Virginia, is now accepting applications for a Mathematics Instructional Coach, 10.5 month (210 days), position that is available in the division for the 2025-2026 school year.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the school principal(s), the Mathematics Instructional Coach provides support to secondary teachers in the development of high-quality/effective math instruction and intervention.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Curriculum Related:
- Participates in division curriculum work sessions
- Participates in updating pacing guides on a yearly basis and using pacing guides to assist classroom teachers in planning for standards-based instruction aligned with the division calendar
- Assists teachers with the selection of lessons/materials that align to the standards
- Assists with preparing the Summer Academy intervention curriculum based on identified needs of students attending
Assessment Related:
- Reviews, edits, and revises common assessments to ensure alignment with the SOL
- Assists in the administration of the VDOE SOL and other division assessments
- Assists in planning remediation schedules for expedited SOL retakes for math courses
- Gathers and shares data from all common and state assessments with appropriate stakeholders
- Researches, compiles and monitors the selection of intervention strategies for Tier II and III services
- Collects and provides user-friendly math intervention data for teachers
- Participates in the math placement process to ensure students are provided an appropriate level of challenge
- Participates in Professional Learning Community/data meetings to support teacher knowledge and use of diagnostic, formative and summative data
Instruction Related:
- Serves as an instructional coach to teachers as it relates to teaching mathematics
- Assists math teachers with unit/lesson planning
- Assists co-teacher teams with planning and delivery of instruction
- Meets with and advises specific teachers who need additional support in planning effective instruction
- Plans and models lessons/strategies for classroom/special education teachers
- Develops a solid understanding of resources/materials available though the math curriculum for teacher use in developing unit/lesson plans
- Identifies and creates (if necessary) targeted intervention strategies to support instruction during I/E blocks
- Keeps records of weekly collaboration meetings with classroom teachers, showing student growth data and interventions
Professional Development:
- Using student data, assists teachers in identifying the learning needs of students and develops, plans and facilitates professional learning opportunities for teachers
- Identifies and provides learning opportunity offerings for teachers
- Explores extension activities that can be used with G/T students and assists teachers in scaffolding learning experiences
- Explores scaffolding opportunities for special education and English Language Learning and assists teachers with implementing support structures for identified students
- Seeks out and participates in coaching experiences that will enhance knowledge of working with adult learners
Division-Focused Related:
- Provides support to newly contracted math teachers as they transition into MCPS aligned teaching practices
- Assists the Administrator of Mathematics in working with initiatives required by the state or school division to meet state expectations (i.e., evidence-based curriculum, school and division support plan goals and measures, grading practices, etc.)
- Assists principals in gathering and entering data into school datasheets as related to the school’s required yearly school support plan
- Assists with transition issues related to elementary students moving to the middle school and middle school students moving into the high school
- Discharges all responsibilities and fulfills all obligations as specified in contract, policies and guidelines of the Montgomery County School Board
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in Middle School Mathematics, Mathematics, or a Mathematics Specialist endorsement
- Five years of successful mathematics classroom teaching experience at the secondary level
- Strong understanding of mathematics content and pedagogy
- Strong written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal skills
- Experience in curriculum development and developing unit/lesson plans which align with evidence-based math instruction research
- Experience in providing explicit and systematic instruction within the delivery of Tier I instruction to strengthen students’ math skills
- Experience in providing specific Tier II and III intervention strategies to students who are working below grade level
- Experience in leading teams in analyzing student performance data and identifying instructional strengths and needs of students in order to plan out team-based evidence-based strategies to address the learning gaps of various student groups
- Experience or working familiarity with Google products for instruction, collaboration, and coursework
- Experience in utilizing technology in an instructional environment
- One or more years in a leadership role (i.e., Department Chair, mentoring/supporting new teachers, coaching colleagues, school-based team leader for improvement, etc.)
- Functional knowledge of commonly used office equipment and work-flow technologies
- Ability to maintain an unquestionable degree of confidentiality
- Ability to multitask, work with interruptions, and work under pressure
- Ability to be dependable and punctual
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Full Mathematics endorsement preferred
- Experience with instructional coaching
- Experience developing and providing professional development
- Master’s degree in Mathematics or Curriculum and Instruction
SALARY: $52,575.88 - $86,938.00 annually, with benefits (salary may change with 2025-2026 budget considerations)
