Montgomery County Public Schools is accepting applications for a Marching Band Percussion Instructor at Blacksburg High School. This is a part-time, supplemental position for the 2025-2026 school year.
The marching band percussion instructor will work with the Director or Bands, instructional staff members and students to ensure a positive experience for students and successful public performances. These efforts will be accomplished through summer instruction (prior to the start of the school year), after-school rehearsals, weekend events and performance events. The marching band percussion instructor shall enforce and adhere to the policies, rules and guidelines of Montgomery County Public Schools and the band program to which they are associated.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Must be 21 years old or older
- Must be experienced working with marching bands and drumline.
- Experience in the various sub groups of the drumline (PIT and battery)
- Experience in composing and choreographing routines for the various drumline groups
- Demonstrated management and leadership skills
- Ability to exercise good judgment in making decisions
- Proven ability to carry an assignment to its completion
- Demonstrated success in accomplishing tasks associated with the duties and responsibilities listed below.
- Certified music teacher, current college music education major or demonstrate a strong applicable background preferred, but not required
- Previous experience as a coach or participation in the sport at the high school or college level
- Current CPR certification
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Attend summer band rehearsals. Dates and time TBD by the Director of Bands
- Attend all rehearsals during the course of the season
- Attend all competitions (approximately 4), home football games and other public appearances as needed by the Director of Bands
- Design, choreograph and teach percussion routines that effectively complement and enhance the audio component of the marching band show
- Evaluate members’ abilities and design a routine accordingly
- Work closely with the Director of Bands and other staff members to develop a musical program that includes multiple types of percussion instruments
- Instruct members in fundamental percussion techniques
- Manage all equipment necessary for rehearsals and performances including maintenance, repair and acquisition recommendations ensuring that the percussion students are properly equipped for rehearsals and performances
- Recruit potential percussion members while retaining current members
- Other related duties, as assigned, to assist the Director of Bands prepare students for home games, competitions and public appearances
- Follow all policies of Montgomery County Public Schools and the band program to which they are associated
Salary: Supplemental Contract determined by the Montgomery County School Board
