The Montgomery County School Board in Virginia is now accepting applications for school social worker positions that may become available within our division for the 2025 – 2026 school year.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direction of the Director of Student Services and Safety and the McKinney Vento Liaison, the School Social Worker provides a variety of services to children and families, especially those experiencing homelessness. The individual works with students, parents, school personnel, and with representatives of community agencies to serve as an advocate and help create a nurturing and inclusive school environment where every student can thrive. The School Social Worker also serves as a link between families and community and school resources.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Hold or be eligible for a Virginia Department of Education teaching license with an endorsement as a social worker
- Minimum of one year experience is an educationally related social science field
ESSENTIAL TASKS:
- Know developmental psychology
- Possess knowledge of school policies and regulations
- Possess knowledge of the philosophy and operation of available social services
- Demonstrate strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Utilize Google Suite applications
- Demonstrate computer literacy and functional knowledge of commonly used office equipment and work-flow technologies
- Communicate effectively with strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
- Maintain an unquestionable degree of confidentiality
- Engage and communicate with students and families with a non-judgmental attitude
- Ability to multitask, work with interruptions, and work under pressure
- Demonstrate dependability, punctuality, and reliability in fulfilling responsibilities
- Possess knowledge and skills in working with students in need of additional support
- Demonstrate a student-centered and flexible approach
- Assist parents in accessing and utilizing school and community resources. Provide parenting education.
- Provide emotional support to students and develop intervention strategies to increase school success.
- Provide case management for students and families requiring multiple resources.
- Understand the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act and how to identify students who qualify under this act.
- Identify and aid in removing educational barriers for students and provide support to teachers and staff on how to best support a student’s needs.
- Represent the school division on designated interagency committees and boards.
- Make home visits and provide transportation to students/families, on occasion.
- Participate in school and department meetings.
- Attend required professional development.
- Maintains open communication with students, parents, staff, and the Supervisor
- Strives to improve professional knowledge and competency
- Performs other job-related tasks as assigned by the Supervisor
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with case management
- Experience in a public school setting
- Experience working with Spanish-speaking families
FLSA Status: Exempt
SALARY: $50,072.26 - $83,120.04 annually; with benefits; commensurate with experience (salary may change due to 2025-2026 budget considerations)
