Position Title: Development Coordinator

Status: Part-Time/Non-Exempt/Hourly

Location: Montgomery Museum of Art & History, Christiansburg, VA

Pay Rate: $20/hour

Position Overview

The Part-Time Development Coordinator will play a key role supporting the Montgomery Museum of Art & History fundraising and development strategies, focusing on high-impact activities such as donor cultivation, sponsorship management, and fundraising event coordination. Working closely with the Executive Director, board members, and pertinent committees, the coordinator will leverage technology, partnerships, and collaborative support to strengthen donor engagement and promote the Museum endowment fund, capital campaign, and Museum events.

About the Museum

The Museum’s mission is to connect and engage the community through the arts and the preservation and interpretation of history. Our vision is that the Museum will be a premier regional cultural center that offers creative, inspirational, and enriching programming and is an inclusive, collaborative gathering space for the entire community.

As part of its long-term vision, the Museum has established an endowment fund to ensure sustainable support for the Museum’s programs, operations, and historic preservation projects. Over 42 months, the Museum has raised over $1.4 million for purchase price of our building and several major capital improvements. Additional funding is currently being sought for the remaining balance of the purchase price and other building enhancements.

This position is approximately 15 hours per week, broken down as follows:

Key Responsibilities

Endowment / Capital Campaign Relationship Building (~10 hours/week)

  • Secure donor funds through strategic communications and marketing efforts such as donor meetings, donor outreach, and follow-ups.
  • Develop personalized donor communications, including thank-you letters, calls, and impact reporting.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and Capital Campaign Steering Committee to communicate the importance of the Endowment Fund / Capital Campaign and its impact to stakeholders.
  • Provide progress updates to Executive Director and Board of Directors regularly.

Fundraising Events (~3 hours/week)

  • Cultivate relationships with individual donors, corporate sponsors, and community partners, prioritizing major and mid-level donors.
  • With Museum staff, plan and coordinate high-impact fundraising events, including annual campaigns, benefit events, and donor appreciation gatherings.
  • Partner with volunteers, interns, and staff to plan event logistics and execution.
  • Secure sponsorships and build relationships with event participants to encourage ongoing support.

Administrative & Reporting (~2 hours/week)

  • Maintain accurate records of donations, sponsorships, and contributions using donor management software.
  • Provide regular updates on development activities to the Executive Director, Capital Campaign Steering Committee and event sub-committees, and board.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, communications, marketing, or a related field. Equivalent work experience may be considered.
  • Proven experience in fundraising, donor relations, or event coordination.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling proposals and maintain meaningful donor relationships.
  • Familiarity with donor stewardship and fundraising best practices.
  • Proficiency in donor management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Proficiency in museum software, Past Perfect.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a museum or cultural institution.
  • Familiarity with the New River Valley community and its philanthropic landscape.

Work Hours and Compensation

This is a part-time position (approximately 15 hours per week) at a rate of $20/hour, with occasional evening and weekend hours required.
