NATURE OF WORK: This is skilled work repairing and maintaining paved and unpaved airfield surfaces, hangers, and various mechanical devices using a variety of light and heavy maintenance and construction equipment, power and hand tools. Work also involves semi-skilled and manual labor required to perform a variety of duties necessary to maintain airport properties while following airport security regulations concerning access to airfield. Employees in this class report to the Airfield Maintenance Supervisor.
Work Responsibilities
WR1. Maintains and performs basic repairs of light and heavy construction and related equipment to include tractors, lawn mowers, light and heavy trucks, sweeper truck, bucket truck, road grader, bull dozer, weed eaters, chainsaws and related equipment.
WR2. Operates trucks and related automotive equipment in order to clean, repair and maintain paved surfaces, cut grass, haul dirt, gravel and asphalt following standard industry and airport safety and security policies and procedures.
WR3. Maintains and performs basic repairs of mechanical devices such as automatic gates, generator, runway and taxiway lights, and related systems following standard industry and airport safety and security policies and procedures.
WR4. Reads manuals, technical journals, checklists, memos and other written instructions as needed to complete maintenance and repair of equipment.
WR5. Performs basic carpentry, plumbing, painting and electrical duties in order to repair and maintain buildings or structures owned by the Airport Authority or tenants.
WR6. Coordinates airfield maintenance work with airport control tower, other airport personnel, vendors, contractors, state employees, and airport patrons using two-way radios and/or phones.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of electric systems and controls.
Knowledge of basic carpentry, painting and plumbing methods and materials.
Knowledge of concrete and asphalt maintenance and repair.
Knowledge of the proper and safe operation and maintenance of airport vehicles and equipment.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions in repairing and maintaining electrical and mechanical systems and equipment.
Ability to operate trucks, light and heavy maintenance and construction equipment such as dump trucks and backhoes.
Ability to repair and maintain a variety of light and heavy vehicles and equipment used in grounds and street maintenance.
Ability to read and understand written instructions, repair manuals and equipment specifications.
Ability to communicate orally as needed to explain problems with equipment, necessary repairs, and use two-way radio or telephone.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, airport tenants, customers and the public.
Ability to work outside in all elements as needed to perform the essential functions of the job.
Skill in operating a variety of light and heavy maintenance equipment.
Skill in diagnosing and repairing defects in gas and diesel engines and related mechanical systems and equipment.
Skill in the care and use of hand and power tools used to repair and maintain vehicles and equipment.
