MAINTENANCE UTILITY WORKER WATER/SEWER/STREET
Salary Range $19.65 - $30.73
Hourly/Full Time/BiWeekly/Non-Exempt
NATURE OF WORK
This is skilled and semi-skilled mechanical work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water distribution and wastewater collection facilities and mechanisms. This classification also assists with the installation and maintenance of equipment and facilities at water treatment plants, pumping stations, water pollution control plants, and lift stations, elevated tanks, wells and booster pumps.
Employees of this class perform specialized mechanical work involving skills that can normally be acquired only on the job. Because the work may be performed as a member of a small crew, duties may involve unskilled work as well as skilled and semi-skilled mechanical repair and installation. Work is generally performed under direct supervision of a maintenance mechanic.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Obey, follow, and comply with all Safety Rules, procedures, regulations, and operating instructions for all power tools, power equipment, vehicles, and construction equipment such as concrete saws, tamping machines, and jackhammers.
- Maintain, repair, and service all types of water mains, pipes, fittings, and hydrants.
- Replace and maintain meters and associated fittings.
- Maintain and repair water wells, pumps and associated equipment, unstop sewer mains, laterals, and manholes.
- Use 90lb jackhammer to break up asphalt and concrete.
- Excavate and backfill sidewalks, streets, and trenches using hand and power tools.
- Perform traffic control activities to include flagman duties.
- Assist with main, tank, and well chlorination.
- Assist with the installation, repair, and replacement of motors, pumps, valves, and compressors.
- Clean, lubricate, and generally maintain tools and equipment.
- Operate equipment including pickup trucks with attached trailers, dump trucks and various mowers and/or ATV's, etc.
- Perform grounds maintenance and right-of-way clearing.
- Prepare oneself and the work site for job requirements to include safety equipment, tools, and materials.
- Ability to work long hours and on nights, weekends, and holidays, in ambient weather conditions, to provide continuous service to customers or to assist with special projects as required.

REQUIREMENTS OF WORK
- Knowledge of the methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water and sewer lines and associated devices.
- Knowledge of the municipal water distribution and sewer collection systems.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
- Skill in the proper use and care of the tools and equipment employed on water main, sewer collection and related installations.
- Skill in safe driving practices.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to learn operational characteristics of water distribution and collection systems.
- Ability to learn requirements, procedures, tools, and materials used in daily operations.
- Ability to establish and maintain a good working relationship in a team environment.
- Ability to respond to work when called after normal working hours in emergencies and as necessary for job duties.
- Ability to work safely and interact in a professional manner with other employees, contractors, and the public.
REQUIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Valid current driver's license and be insurable by the Board's insurance carrier.
- Must obtain a Class A CDL on or before probationary period ends.
- Obtain a Class A-N CDL in accordance with department policy.
DESIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- Experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water and/or wastewater infrastructure or equivalent experience in construction or a related trade.
- Experience using computers and related devices.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
- Ability to carry 90 lbs. (example: jackhammer) for a distance of 50 feet.
- Ability to enter manholes and work for long periods in confined and awkward spaces.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor for an extended time under extreme weather or other adverse conditions.
- Ability to lift, bend, stand, and climb stairs and ladders to three stories (up to 200 feet on water storage tanks) in both indoor and outdoor settings.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- A majority of this work will be performed outside at various sites and locations. Employees in this position will work outdoors in ambient weather conditions and may be exposed to loud noise and mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards or other adverse conditions.
