What are the responsibilities and job description for the Surgical Tech Apprentice - Surgical Services - Days position at Montrose Regional Health?
Position Overview:
Under the direct supervision of a Certified Surgical Technician, functions as an instrument technician, coordinating and assembling appropriate instrumentation for each individual case, passing instrumentation, appropriate medications, and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. Follows the established plan of care and provides direct surgical care interventions within the scope of practice. Works under the supervision of the OR Clinical Coordinator, Director of Surgical Services and/or RN (Circulator). Collaborates with unit/hospital staff and other health professionals. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Essential Functions:
Promotes the philosophy and mission of Montrose Regional Health.
Uses acceptable standards of practice based on AORN/AST Standards to help the individual/family identify and meet basic health needs and to achieve a positive surgical outcome.
Works with direct supervision as a Scrub Technician displaying expert knowledge of surgical instrumentation for a variety of cases.
Understands surgical techniques and recognizes breaks in techniques.
Works closely with the Circulating RN to assist Surgeon to perform cases in a timely manner and organizes work to reduce downtime between cases.
Promotes a climate in which patients can act in their own interest or intervenes when they are unable to do so.
Uses available resources to help bring a better understanding of specific surgical processes to fellow workers.
Works to achieve desired health care outcomes by effectively utilizing human and material resources.
Accountable for the ethical, legal, and professional responsibilities related to surgical practice across all roles, within the scope of practice.
Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned.
Education and Work Experience
a) Education: Current enrollment and engaged in the last 12 months prior to graduation from an
approved school of surgical technology.
b) Training & Experience: Near Completion and engaged in the last 12 months of an approved school of surgical technician.
c) Job Knowledge: Knowledge of anatomy and physiology as it relates to surgical technology.
Because this position is Pre-Certification and the caregiver is finishing their training, all tasks performed must be under direct supervision of a Certified Surgical Technician. The CDPHE defines Direct Supervision in this scenario as (Present). This is described in 2.6.1.14 page 18 of the CDPHE Radiation Control 6CCR1007-1 Part 02.
The caregiver must provide MMH with documentation of enrollment in an approved surgical technician program.
Ability to effectively communicate, verbally, and non-verbally, in a clear, concise manner.
Administrative and philosophical compatibility with Montrose Regional Health.
Interpersonal skills and sound judgment necessary to communicate with a wide variety of persons including patients.
