Position OverviewThis 385-bed acute-care hospital is a stroke receiving center and Level 2 trauma facility, offering innovative and patient-centered care. The Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) team is seeking a Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) to support complex surgical procedures.The RNFA is a perioperative nurse who functions as a first assistant to the surgeon in the Cardiothoracic OR, while also circulating, scrubbing, and performing other duties as needed.Key Responsibilities
- Assist the surgeon during procedures, ensuring patient safety and adherence to hospital protocols.
- Participate in preoperative assessment and planning for surgical patients.
- Provide surgical exposure using instruments, retractors, suctioning, and sponging.
- Handle and dissect tissues in collaboration with the surgeon.
- Clamp blood vessels, manage bleeding, and perform ligations as needed.
- Suture muscle, fascia, subcutaneous, and skin tissue under surgical direction.
- Place surgical drains when indicated.
- Maintain clinical competence by actively participating in procedures.
- Participate in on-call rotation as required.
- Recognize safety hazards and initiate corrective actions.
- Perform additional responsibilities in the Cardiac OR, such as circulating, scrubbing, and HOB duties.
- Ensure proper case cart preparation for procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Current California RN License.
- CNOR Certification (Certified Perioperative Nurse) – Required.
- Completion of an approved RNFA course, including required internship hours.
- Minimum 2 years of perioperative nursing experience, with diversified scrubbing and circulating experience.
- BLS and ACLS Certification (must be maintained current at all times).
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong critical thinking and active listening skills.
- Ability to work in a physically and mentally demanding environment.
- Must possess manual dexterity, auditory, and visual acuity to ensure patient safety.
