Examples of Duties
Firefighter / Paramedic Trainee
Under close supervision, participates in a comprehensive joint training program at a District sponsored fire academy; performs all related learning and testing activities; performs related fire and emergency medical services activities while awaiting assignment to the fire academy; successfully completes the fire academy. Upon successful completion of the fire academy, a Firefighter Paramedic Trainee will be eligible to be placed as a probationary status Firefighter Paramedic. The probationary period is eighteen (18) months. Time spent as a Firefighter Paramedic Trainee by an employee who is subsequently promoted to the classification of Firefighter Paramedic shall be credited towards the probationary period.
Firefighter / Paramedic
Under direction, will perform tasks related to the safety of others in the Moraga-Orinda Fire District including fire calls, EMS calls, and public service.
Note : Due to the nature of this profession, the environment may require the employee to perform tasks alone which would generally be performed with the assistance another.

The District is a member of the Contra Costa County Employees' Retirement Association (CCCERA). Employees classified as a Firefighter Paramedic Trainee are safety members and receive retirement benefits of 3%@50 (Legacy) or 2.7%@57 (PEPRA).
The following CCCERA rates are in effect for Fiscal Year 2024 / 2025 :
PEPRA, 2.7 @ 57 (new members of a defined benefit plan) :
The District pays the full employer share of retirement cost for PEPRA employees.
Employee contribution per month : 19.22%
Legacy Members, 3% @ 50 (previous membership with CCCERA or a reciprocal retirement prior to 2013) :
Legacy Members also pay an additional 7% toward the employer share of retirement contributions. Below is an example of monthly contribution rates.
25 years of age : 17.68% 7% = 24.68%
30 years of age : 19.13% 7% = 26.13%
40 years of age : 22.39% 7% = 29.39%
The District provides a specific dollar amount to each employee based on the employee's benefit enrollment level to apply to health coverage. A dental program is available along with District-paid vision coverage.
Uniform Pay of $61 per month.
Holiday Pay in the amount of twelve hours of overtime credit paid in the month that the holiday occurs for each of the 13 annually paid holidays.
Ambulance Stipend - members assigned to Medic 41 and Engine / Medic 45 will receive a stipend equal to 5% of the current 5th step Firefighter / Paramedic pay for each 24-hour shift, or a pro rata share per shift as applicable.
FLSA Pay - Employees working a 48 / 96 shift schedule shall receive an amount equal to 1 / 2 times the regular rate for 10 hours that are part of the employees' regular schedule.
Deferred Compensation Savings Plan (457) is available to employees.
American Fidelity voluntary insurances are available to include a Flexible Spending Account (FSA), disability income, critical illness and life insurance.
Retiree Health Savings Account (RHSA) : an employer and employee paid tax-advantage savings and investing vehicle used to help you pay for health-care costs at retirement. Currently, The District contributes $167 per month and the Employee contributes $100 per month (required) on a pre-tax basis. Firefighter Paramedic Trainees are not subject to the mandatory employee contribution until classified as a Firefighter Paramedic.
Employee Assistance Program (EAP) : A District-paid EAP is available for employees and members of their household.
The District does not participate in Social Security for regular, full-time employees.
50,000 Life Insurance Policy paid for by the District with an option to elect additional coverage at the employees expense.
Acting pay of 5% above base rate for duties performed in a higher classification.
Employees pay an amount equal to 1.45% of salary toward Medicare. An equal amount is paid by the District.
Leaves : 13 paid holidays annually; 14 hours per month of accrued vacation for 1-10 years of service; 12 hours of sick leave accrued per month (unused leave applied to service credit at retirement).
