POSITION SUMMARY: The Director position is a full-time position that is responsible for the administration and oversight of all programming and operations for the Payne Gallery of Moravian University, and Moravian University's permanent collection of art. This role offers an opportunity to manage one of the university's most cherished cultural assets.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Moravian University Gallery Spaces

  • Shape a strategic vision for exhibitions and educational programming that support the university's and art department's mission and is in line with the Gallery mission statement.
  • Effectively manage the Gallery including budgets; maintain records; arrange insurance needs; negotiate loan agreements; oversee security of the gallery, storeroom, and campus placements of artworks.
  • Plan, curate, and organize regularly scheduled exhibitions per year. Coordinate all details of shipping, insurance, security and documentation.
  • Supervise and provide support for gallery assistants and student workers to install/deinstall exhibitions.
  • Guide artist or guest curator in exhibition design and installation.
  • Act as a consultant for exhibition in alternative campus spaces and community partnership spaces when necessary.
  • Oversee the marketing and publicity for the Galleries, the permanent collection, and all exhibitions that supports a broad mission of public engagement intended to expand the impact and visibility of the gallery, its exhibitions, and collection within and beyond the campus community, and to enhance the regional and national reputation of the Moravian University Art Galleries.

  • Maintains an effective working relationship with the college's Art Department to support all relevant educational activities.
  • Consults with college administrators to best maximize the role of a college art gallery and museum in college life.
  • Prepare an annual report for Payne Gallery and that will be shared with the Art Department, Provost, president's cabinet, donors, and the greater University community through the Moravian University website - Due at the end of each academic year.
  • Coordinate and comply with the recommendations of the University Safety Officer quarterly to ensure all spaces meet equipment and fire hazard safety standards. Make any required changes, complete any required safety training and ensure that all student workers are properly trained yearly, and are meeting safety standards.

Moravian University Permanent Art Collection/Collections Management

  • Manage the permanent collection by presenting options for works of art for acquisition by purchase or donation within framework of art acquisition strategic plan to the art department (and exploratory board for feedback)
  • Catalog, cite, maintain, preserve and conserve works in the collection according to standard museum practices; supervise collection maintenance and build curatorial files on the collection to provide accurate and timely records and ensure the permanent collection, which includes holdings from Moravian University, is well maintained and available for loan.
  • Maintain the digital collection archive for internal and external inquiries, scholarship, and online presence.
  • Strategically place and rotate artwork from the permanent collection throughout campus with QR codes/didactic panels to enhance the aesthetics of buildings and grounds, allow for greater accessibility, and create awareness of the collection and exhibition program.

General

  • Cultivate partnerships with relevant community members and organizations including Lehigh Valley college and university art galleries and museums, art centers, public, charter, and private schools, and local and regional teaching artists.
  • Provide support to student and faculty research initiatives involving the permanent collection, and future and past exhibitions.
  • Works collaboratively with the Center for Inclusive Excellence to build and create initiatives focused on supporting the needs of staff & faculty with diverse, multiple and intersecting identities.
  • Maintain relationships with important institutional lenders.
  • Nurture relationships with donors and Moravian University and Seminary's Advancement Department for the purposes of the development of exhibitions, special projects, facilities, and the permanent collection.
  • Manage, interview, hire, and mentor student gallery assistants.
  • Oversee and coordinate the transport of art and materials for installations.
  • Work with students/staff on installation of exhibits.
  • Uphold, review, and update the Payne Gallery Mission and Vision statements.
  • Follow best practices as outlined in the Association of Academic Museums and Galleries Professional Practices Document
  • Other duties as assigned by the department chair with approval from the Dean.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Effective interpersonal, communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to work collegially and collaboratively with faculty, staff and students
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of professionalism in interactions with all constituencies
  • Working knowledge of historic and contemporary art

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • The Director should hold a graduate degree in museum or curatorial studies, fine art, art management or art history. Applicants without a graduate degree must have a record of accomplishment and eight (8) years of gallery administration, educational program management and collection management. Demonstrated ability to manage professional and student exhibitions in keeping with the mission of the University. Demonstrated understanding and appreciation of art, combined with the business and marketing skills to manage a team and run an efficient operation.
