What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechatronics Maintenance Technician position at Morcon, Inc.?

This position is responsible for providing industrial maintenance support to ensure the safe and effective operation of the production facility. Key responsibilities include equipment setup, breakdown, mechanical troubleshooting and repair. This position may rotate to different functions within the process as business needs dictate. The ability to multi-task and manage a fast-paced environment where quality, safety and productivity are key competencies, is required. This position is considered a safety-sensitive position.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Adhere to all directives from Shift Leadership, ensuring alignment with operational and safety goals.
  • Strictly comply with all Morcon safety policies and procedures, including Lockout/Tag out (LOTO), machine guarding, and electrical safety protocols.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area, ensuring compliance with 5S and lean manufacturing principles.
  • Execute and document preventive maintenance (PM) procedures on high-speed paper converting machinery, robotic handling systems, and material transport equipment to minimize downtime and optimize asset life.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot electromechanical systems, including:
  • PLC systems (Programmable Logic Controllers) – Troubleshoot faults, perform I/O testing, and assist in program modifications as needed.
  • Industrial automation & control systems – Work with VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives), servo drives, industrial sensors (photoelectric, proximity, capacitive), and HMI (Human-Machine Interfaces).
  • Pneumatic & hydraulic systems – Troubleshoot and repair actuators, valves, pumps, solenoids, and compressed air systems.
  • Mechanical power transmission components – Inspect and service bearings, seals, gears, chains, sprockets, belts, couplings, and mechanical drive systems.
  • Electrical systems (480V, 3-phase, low voltage DC) – Perform safe wiring, testing, and troubleshooting of motors, relays, and circuit protection devices.
  • Robotics and automated handling systems – Support maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of robotic systems used in material stacking, packaging, or transport.
  • Analyze and interpret equipment manuals, ladder logic diagrams, electrical schematics, and hydraulic/pneumatic prints to perform complex maintenance and service tasks.
  • Assist in continuous improvement initiatives by identifying machine inefficiencies, recommending automation upgrades, and implementing control system optimizations.
  • Utilize the CMMS system to document work orders, log maintenance activities, track parts usage, and analyze equipment performance trends for predictive maintenance.
  • Perform precision alignment and calibration of rotating equipment, sensors, and automation components to ensure optimal functionality.
  • Serve as a technical resource for operators and junior technicians, providing training on equipment functionality, troubleshooting techniques, and best practices.
  • Operate production equipment as a backup when needed, ensuring minimal downtime and continued workflow.
  • Stay current with emerging mechatronics technologies, automation advancements, and industry best practices to support innovation and process improvements.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, contributing to the overall efficiency and reliability of the manufacturing operation.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

§ Operational knowledge of converting and material handling equipment

§ Proficiency in benchmarking to measure and apply consistent performance through best practices

§ Ability to Implement Root-Cause-Analysis (RCA) to problems before trying to solve them, by which the main cause of a problem is isolated and identified

§ Understanding of the 5S methodology to improve workplace efficiency and reduce waste

§ Ability to maintain and improve equipment effectiveness through centerline data

§ Formal training in Industrial Maintenance or Mechatronics Systems, preferred

§ Flexibility to work any shift in a 24/7 manufacturing operation

§ Familiarity with industrial electrical concepts

§ Proficiency in basic Mig and Tig welding for repair purposes

§ Proficiency in shop machinery including mills, lathes, drill presses and normal industrial tools for repair purposes

§ Good written and oral communication skills

§ Ownership of all tools listed on the Morcon Maintenance Technician Tool List within 90 days of employment

§ Completion of OJT certifications of converting and material handling equipment

§ Completion of Company Safety Trainings

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

§ Minimum High School diploma or GED

§ 2 years of industrial maintenance experience at journeyman level, or an industrial maintenance degree/certification from an accredited institution

§ Computer skills including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365

§ AC/DC motors, VFD motor controls

§ Experienced with digital and analog control devices

§ Experience with Manufacturing equipment; conveyors, photo eyes, limit switches

§ Familiarity of electro and mechanical components

§ Favored skills: PLC’s, Allen Bradley Drives, Mechanical, Hydraulic, Pneumatic, and access controls

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

§ While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly bend, lift, stretch and reach both below the waist and above the head

  • Lift and move objects up to 45 pounds each
  • Walking within and around the site with great frequency
  • Ability to climb ladders safely and without limitation, and work off platforms and equipment at significant heights
  • Full manual dexterity in both hands and wrists, eye/hand coordination, feet (foot pedals), manual (picking, pinching, holding, grasping), and wrist motion (repetitive flexion/rotation)
  • Working conditions may include small spaces, dust, fumes/odors, hot/cold temperatures, inside/outside noise, vibration, standing for long hours and wet/uneven surfaces
  • Ability to stand/walk for up to 10-12 hours

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $25.00 - $35.00 per hour
