Job Summary
A Community Assistant, or CA, is an undergraduate full-time student who lives in an assigned MSU residence hall and supports students living in the residence hall community during the summer sessions. As a live-in staff member, the primary role of a CA is to build a welcoming and inclusive community within the residence halls, while encouraging cooperation and consideration within group-living environments. A CA responds to and assists in the resolution of emergency, crisis, and conflict situations, including those between individuals and with university policies and procedures. In addition, the CA serves as a member of their residence hall’s community team that includes the hall’s Community Assistants and Area Coordinator, to create and maintain a positive community environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Build positive and meaningful relationships with the students in and around the residence hall
  • Plans and facilitates activities in the residence hall and/or campus community that encourage social interaction, relationship building, and personal development with and among members of the residential community
  • Develop a sense of community in the residence halls through the creation of unique and creative bulletin boards, door decorations, community communication and other themes that allow the residential community to represent itself as a unified group.
  • Develop a sense of community that is inclusive for students from different backgrounds and social identities
  • Serve as role models for other MSU students, especially those in and around their residential community, by observing ethical standards consistent with Morehead State University and Office of Student Housing mission and values.
  • Educate students regarding university policies and procedures and, when necessary, address and respond to actions that are in conflict with such policies to re-enforce standards and expectations for MSU students living in a community environment.
  • Serves as a representative for the Office of Student Housing, which includes a positive and professional demeanor that is consistent with Office of Student Housing mission, vision, values, and principles.
  • Participate in a rotating daily, weeknight, and weekend on-call rotations, including regular community walks with the residence hall(s) and responding to any received phone calls on the designated on-call cell phone
  • Assist students in resolving conflicts that may occur in their residential community, including facilitating roommate mediations and dialogues among members of the residential community.
  • Knowledgeable about campus and community resources and serve as a referral for student questions and/or concerns.
  • Serve as first-level responders to emergency and crisis situations in and around the residence halls, and contact appropriate university and/or emergency response staff as needed
  • Attend and actively participate in required meetings, trainings, residence hall opening, and residence hall closing
  • Perform administrative responsibilities, including, but not limited to, the distribution of mail, occupancy reports (check-in/out documentation), track key distribution (both long-term and short-term), and on-call reports
  • Provide administrative assistance in the Housing Office and participate in Office of Student Housing committees and initiatives as needed
  • Maintain university records in accordance with university policies and federal, state and local laws
  • Maintain and respond to regular lines of communication in a timely manner, including email  Maintain positive relationships with residents and other staff members  Other duties as assigned


Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • The Community Assistant position is considered a 32-hour per week commitment during the time of employment
  • Community Assistant responsibilities begin the evening of May 15, 2023 and officially end on the evening of July 23, 2023
  • Community Assistants will be required to attend training and orientation prior to the end of the Spring 2022 semester; date and time TBD
  • Community Assistants are expected to be available during summer session opening and closing periods
  • Community Assistants not enrolled in summer session classes at MSU and considered full time work studies will receive a pre-tax stipend equal to 32-hours per week at $8.25 per hour for 11 weeks, distributed equally throughout the summer sessions
  • Community Assistants who are enrolled in summer classes at MSU will be considered part-time work studies and will receive a pre-tax stipend equal to 20-hours per week at $8.25 per hour for 11 weeks, distributed equally throughout the summer sessions
  • Community Assistants will be paid in accordance with the university pay schedule.
  • Due to the hour commitment, Community Assistants are prohibited from additional on-campus employment.
  • Community Assistants will be provided with a single occupancy room or equivalent room in an assigned residence hall space.

The Community Assistant is directly supervised by an Area Coordinator, and indirectly supervised by an Assistant Director.

Minimum Requirements
Enrolled in classes at MSU during the Summer semester or the following Fall semester.
  • Maintain good academic, financial, and disciplinary standing with Morehead State University
  • Maintain an active housing contract with the Office of Student Housing for the summer sessions
