Morehouse General is searching for a Director of Nursing – Perioperative Services!
The Director of Perioperative Services at Morehouse General Hospital is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the surgical services department. This role includes managing staff, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards, and maintaining the quality of patient care. The director will work closely with medical staff and administration to ensure efficient operations and high standards of care in the surgical environment.
Ensures services are of the best quality, are cost contained and are carried out in an expeditious manner. Maintains performance improvement activities within the department including but not limited to assessment, planning, personnel management, resource management, budgeting, expense management, customer relations, troubleshooting/problem solving, and evaluation of effectiveness. This position is responsible for assuring adherence to quality and regulatory requirements and standards.
- Oversee daily operations of the surgical services department.
- Prepare daily staff schedules for surgical services.
- Ensure pre-operative, post-operative, and surgical theaters are sterile for all procedures
- Maintain inventory of medical supplies and equipment.
- Serves as a leader and resource person in facilitating efficient operational activities within their assigned area of responsibility in accordance with internal policies and procedures
- Collaborates with CNO to develop staffing and operational budget for each unit.
- Set Annual Quality and Performance Improvement Goals for each unit.
- Establishes, implements, and evaluates effectiveness of operational plans to assure attainment of goals and adherence to budgetary guidelines.
- Performs all aspects of personnel management, including hiring, onboarding, retention, evaluation of performance and ensuring department is a culture of inclusion
- Makes unit rounds to support staff, answer clinical questions, assure staff have the supplies and equipment to do their job, evaluate care, and to support staff.
- Makes at least one patient round on each unit per shift, focusing on patients that may have concerns or complaints. The focus is service recovery and resolution of concerns.
- Oversees staff, provide direction and guidance and administering management functions within the provisions of policies and standards and federal, state and local regulations.
- Assures that the units have needed supplies and equipment, including medications and food for patients that are admitted late or have changes to their orders.
- Contacts Chief Nursing Officer, communicating pertinent information, i.e., patient care concerns/sentinel events, safety/security issues, physician concerns, etc. Leads Patient Safety and Quality observations and drills in Departments as needed.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Must possess a current, valid Louisiana RN license.
- Must meet basic RN Clinical Competencies for at least one clinical area assigned.
- Must show evidence of the ability to apply critical thinking skills to both clinical and leadership situations.
- Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, patients, families, visitors, and the public.
- Must possess leadership ability and the willingness to work harmoniously in a professional manner.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Master’s degree in nursing or nursing administration is preferred; BSN is required
- Minimum 5 years Acute Care Nursing required, at least 3 years in Surgical Nursing
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Prolonged periods of standing and walking
- Must be physically able to participate in codes and active patient care as needed.
- Sitting, standing, bending, stooping
SAFETY PRACTICES:
- Consistently follows all established Safety procedures, incident/accident protocol and precautions or universal precautions when performing duties relating to work area.
- Always follows good infection control practices and is familiar with Infection control policies, procedures PPE guidelines and guidance relevant to patient care areas.
- Practices proper body mechanics and ergonomics.
- Follows established plans, policies and procedures during emergencies, such as fire evacuation, fire drills and actively participates and leads emergency exercises/disasters etc.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $51.04 - $58.65 per hour
