  • Job Summary

    The Student Specialist Sr. manages the accommodation process for students, including intake processes, review of supporting information, assignment and approval of reasonable academic accommodations. This position provides guidance to faculty as they integrate academic accommodations for individual students and advises the campus community on issues related to accessibility. The Specialist Sr. assists in coordinating new student recruitment with high schools and local agencies and ensures compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations, including the ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

    Essential Functions

  • 40% Student Access, Success and Retention : Determine eligibility for services and current accommodation needs through review of disability documentation; provide ongoing support for the duration of students' academic careers; coordinate referrals to appropriate resources both within the university and in the community; provide timely and responsive service to students; maintain detailed and accurate case notes, confidential files, and records in the database; support accommodation implementation for testing, note taking, alternative formats, deaf and hard of hearing services, and other accommodations. Stay current on theories, best practices, and current legislation related to disability issues, developmental education, and student development.
  • 30% College Engagement and Partnerships : Provide guidance to faculty and staff regarding questions they have in working with students with disabilities and implementing accommodations; contact faculty for new or modified accommodations; facilitate the interactive process between faculty and students in regards to accommodations. Conduct presentations, develop programming, and engage with various departments and agencies in order to ensure collaborative support for students with disabilities. Participate in relevant college committees.
  • 20% Student Outreach and Onboarding : Provide information to prospective students and their support system regarding services, college resources, transition questions and concerns, documentation guidelines, and the process for determining reasonable accommodations; coordinate projects and activities such as new student orientations and accommodation trainings; work collaboratively with High Schools, Community Colleges, Universities, Vocational Rehabilitation and other community agencies to provide ongoing support for students.
  • 10% Other duties as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Associate’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution and two years of student services or college teaching experience or experience assisting with educational program development and coordination, student advisement, financial aid, or related student development programs.

    High School Diploma / GED and four years of student services or college teaching experience or experience assisting with educational program development and coordination, student advisement, financial aid, or related student development programs.

    Desired Qualifications

  • A. Bachelor's Degree in higher education, psychology, sociology, social work, rehabilitation counseling, counseling, compliance or related fields.
  • B. At least 2 years of experience evaluating disability documentation, including psycho-educational, psychological and medical evaluations and determining reasonable accommodations and appropriate support services.
  • C. At least 2 years of experience coordinating services and providing one-on-one support for students (disability services, case management, advising, coaching, mentoring, first year success) in a higher education setting.
  • D. Demonstrated knowledge of federal laws pertaining to individuals with disabilities, including Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act as Amended / ADAA.
  • E. Experience within Student Affairs, developing and maintaining meaningful partnerships and relationships.
  • F. Experience utilizing disability database software, such as DRS Connect, AIM (Accessible Information Management) system or related software.
  • Special Working Conditions

    May be required to work at multiple sites or locations.

    Travel to campus during interview / selection process will be at candidate's own expense.

    This position is not eligible to sponsor individuals for any type of work visa.

    May be required to work evenings and weekends.

    May be required to lift or carry up to 25lbs.

    May be required to sit for a prolonged period of time; viewing a computer monitor.
