Position Description

 

POSITION TITLE:     CustodianI, II, III, IV

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

High School diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code §18A-2-5;
Meet the definition of “Qualifications" in WV Code §18A-4-8b; demonstrated competency,
pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8e (state-approved competency test), as required; and
Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-
10, as appropriate; and

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed drugs while in the workplace. Alcohol and controlled substance which affects employee productivity, safety or judgment in the workplace will not be tolerated. “Custodian I” means personnel employed to keep buildings clean and free of refuse; “Custodian II” means personnel employed as a watchman or groundsman; “Custodian III” means personnel employed to keep buildings clean and free of refuse, to operate the heating and cooling systems and to make minor repairs; “Custodian IV” means personnel employed as head custodian. In addition to providing services as defined in “Custodian III” their duties may include supervising other custodian personnel. (Pursuant to WV §18A-4-8)

 

1.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators,
staff, and the general public;
2.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to
practical situations consistent with the duties of the position;
3.  Ability to interface effectively with other departments, school personnel, other
maintenance staff, and business contacts from outside the county;
4.  Ability to pass written and physical tests that are directly related to the position;
5.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and
community;
6.  Ability to perform duties in full compliance with all county requirements and the Board of
Education policies;
7.  Ability to read and comply with labels and safety warnings on cleaning agents and
hazardous materials;
8.  Ability to perform strenuous physical activity related to custodial duties;
9.  Ability to work under minimal or no supervision; be an effective self-starter;
10.  Ability to understand and follow both written and oral directions;
11.  Complete necessary training and in-service as required by the county;
12.  Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in
situations where only limited standardization exists consistent with the duties of the
position; and
13.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

REPORTS TO:     School Administrator/Director of Support Service

 

FLSA/CONTRACT STATUS:  Non-exempt

 

EMPLOYMENT TERM:  Minimum 200 days annually,  pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8; extended employment terms may be established by the Morgan County Board of Education.

 

SALARY:  Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8a, in accordance with Morgan County Salary Scale, Pay Grade A, B, C, or D, commensurate with experience, classification, and education level.

 

EVALUATION:  Performance in this position will be evaluated annually by immediate supervisor and in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5314 and Morgan County Board of Education Evaluation Policy.

 

JOB SUMMARY:  To perform duties which keep the county buildings in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions o the educational program. The custodian performs assigned custodial duties and repairs and receives supervision from the building administrator.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1.  Keeps buildings and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat,
clean, and free of litter at all times;
2.  Disinfects all water fountains, floors in the restrooms, commodes, urinals, and sinks every day;
3.  Washes all windows on both the inside and outside at least twice each year or more
frequently if necessary;
4.  Performs ground keeping duties as assigned;
5.  Maintains all floors in a clean and attractive condition, including regular waxing, and in a
good state of preservation;
6.  Secures all windows and doors, turns off all lights (except emergency lights), and arms
any alarm systems at the end of each day;
7.  Regulates heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide a temperature
appropriate to the season and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity
(Energy Program);
8.  Performs minor maintenance repairs. Reports any major repairs to the principal;
9.  Moves furniture or equipment within the buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the principal;
10.  Remains on the school premises during the school hours and during non-school hours
when the use of the building has been authorized and his/her attendance has been
required by the principal. The custodian is responsible for having the building ready for
any night activities and any other activities which are regularly held at the school;
11.  Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair;
12.  Performs supportive duties such as:
a. Displays Flag (state and country);
b. Flies Flag at half staff;
c. Inventories supplies;
d. Reports safety hazards within building;
e. Stores equipment;
f. Services carpeted areas;
13.  Maintains an inventory of supplies and equipment and informs the head custodian or
principal of needs in advance so as not to hinder the continued performance of the
assigned duties;
14.  Complies with county policies;
15.  Receives permission from building principal/supervisor to work in excess of 40 hours per week;
16.  Corrects minor safety hazards when observed and/or immediately refers major safety
hazards to building supervisor;
17.  Maintains confidentiality, unquestionable integrity;
18.  Maintains positive work habits;
19.  Performs duties efficiently and productively;
20.  Maintains and/or upgrades skills;
21.  Promotes and maintains positive pupil / staff community relations;
22.  Adheres to Employee Code of Conduct as outlined in Morgan County School’s Policy
4210;
23.  Maintains regular attendance;
24.  Adheres to Employee Code of Conduct as outlined in Morgan County School’s Policy
4210; and
25.  Performs duties as assigned by immediate supervisor(s).

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stoop, reach, stand, walk, lift, pull, push, grasp, talk, hear, see, climb a ladder a minimum of six feet, and use repetitive motions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to lift and move up to 75 pounds of materials, etc. Specific vision abilities are required by this position which include but are not limited to ability to close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and staff members.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The temperature in the work environment can range from below freezing to in access of 90oF when working in the furnace room or kitchen areas or on roof tops. The work surface can be slippery when mopping/stripping floors or completing snow removal. The noise level in the work environment is moderate loud to very loud (60-90 dB).
