The Safety Coordinator supports all activities to ensure a safe, healthy, and accident-free work environment. The position reports to the EHS Manager. The Safety Coordinator maintains a thorough knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local safety legislation, rules, and regulations. The incumbent is a Champion of Safety throughout the organization and promotes continuous safety awareness through auditing, mentoring, training, and coaching. The Safety Coordinator supports the EHS Manager in monitoring and enforcing the company’s Safety Program. The incumbent supports the EHS Manager in developing the organization’s employee health and safety policies, procedures, practices and initiatives. The role supports safety and employee health across the organization on all operational shifts.
SPECIFIC TASKS, DUTIES, AND/OR ACCOUNTABILITIES
Is a Safety Champion, modeling and promoting a strong safety consciousness throughout the organization.
Supports the EHS Manager in designing and executing all aspects of Morgan Foods' Safety Program.
Leads an effective, proactive, cross department, cross function Safety Team. Supports the Safety Team throughout the organization in carrying out safety initiatives, projects, and audits.
Develops, trains, and audits safety policies and procedures which serve to promote safety within the organization and satisfies the organization’s compliance with federal, state, and local legislation, rules, and regulations.
Collects, analyzes, summarizes, reports, and maintains a variety of safety and health data for use in reporting, recordkeeping and the development of safety recommendations and actions directed toward achieving a “zero” accident, “zero” safety recordables work environment.
Responsible for safety record keeping for regulatory reporting including but not limited to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) record-keeping and reporting requirements.
Works with EHS Manager to investigate safety incidences and near misses; conducting root cause analysis and developing actions/recommendations focused on safety remediations to prevent future safety issues.
Is a first responder for the organization, treating work-related illnesses and injuries within first responder training role scope. Maintains first responder/first aid/CPR certifications.
Coordinates, conducts, and maintains records on environmental and employee health and wellness monitoring within the facility.
Working with HR Generalist/Trainer, develops, coordinates, and conducts safety training for in-house and vendor/contractor personnel on various safety-related training including, but not limited to electrical, personal protective equipment, evacuation, slips, trips, falls, lock-out/tag-out, machine guarding, hand tools, powered industrial lifts; fire prevention; confined space entry; handling, storing, and disposing of hazardous materials, and conducting accident investigations.
Responsible for maintaining up to date SDS library and coordinating access.
Carries out all duties required to meet the responsibilities of the Safety Coordinator role.
Travel: < 5% Regional/Domestic
Core Physical Requirements: walking, climbing, bending, twisting, reaching, standing on hard surfaces, using hands, fingers & wrists to type on a keyboard and manipulate small tools and equipment (frequent); Ability to lift 45 lbs. without assistance; Ability to speak English. Ability to speak Spanish preferrable. Core Environmental Requirements: Plant, (Primary) not climate controlled & elevated noise levels in some work areas. PPE requirements: slip resistant shoes, hearing protection; Office, (Secondary) climate controlled.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1. College degree with concentration in occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene, or related discipline preferred. May be substituted with high school or GED equivalent, eight (8) years safety experience in manufacturing environment and completion of OSHA 10-hour General Industry Safety and Health course.
2. Minimum two (2) years safety leadership experience in manufacturing environment. Food processing industry and union environment preferred.
3. 30-OSHA General Industry Safety and Health course certification or ability to successfully complete within 12 months of hire.
4. Associate Safety Professional (ASP) certification desired, Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification preferred. Willingness and interest in maintaining high level of knowledge through professional certifications if required.
5. Computer literacy at intermediate to advanced level on Microsoft Office software (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
6. Excellent communication skills; written, presentation, technology, and training.
7. Takes ownership of areas within span of control and can work independently while being part of a cross-functional safety team.
8. Strong analytic and data compilation capabilities.
9. First Responder/first aid/CPR certified or ability to successfully pass first aid/first responder/CPR training within first 3 months of hire.
